Nah....that just isn't possible. Wikipedia could have never pulled that off... Of course you can rank for many keywords for one site, why do you think Wikipedia is EVERYWHERE? If you watch the front page of most searches you will find about a dozen sites which seem to show up all the time as a few examples: YouTube.com About.com WikiPedia.org etc... |

So the question is is it possible for a site to rank for multiple keywords and the answer is absolutely. It is our experience when a user is focusing on one particular short tail keyword for example "Backlinking" and doing proper on-site and off-site SEO you will eventually begin to rain for longtail keywords which are included in the text surrounding your main keyword such as (back linking software) (the best back linking software) etc. |

Hi MikelDonel, First, search engines do not rank "Sites", they rank individual pages. And while it is possible to have a "page" rank for multiple keywords, the more keywords you try to rank a single page for, the more diluted your efforts will become. Generally speaking, it is best to focus on no more than 2 or 3 keywords per page. If you want to target a large number of keywords then create more pages. Take note of how Wikipedia creates individual pages for each targeted keyword, and the optimization is for that single keyword, and a few related phrases. |

It often happens that your site starts ranking for longer-tail keywords that you didn't even intend to rank for in the first place. That's why it's important to include related LSI keywords within your content and make the content high-quality, which will in turn lead to rankings for those longer-tail keywords.

Why not? Surely you can do that after selecting first some long tail keywords for your website. But there must be some good on/off page strategies, competitors analysis, hard work etc. that can show you good results.

It is definitely possible and considered to be the recommended approach towards SEO campaigns and projects. The fact is, it is even highly recommended to select dozens of keywords, including lots of long-tail terms while entering the vast SEO world because by doing this, and at the same time building links using those terms as anchors and also writing unique and quality contents for the sites which cover the same areas, after a while great results will be gained. When a new site is launched, the best way would be choosing some long-tail keywords for some time because primary terms which are consisted of a few words are very competitive in most cases. Long-tail keywords can also help websites getting found better and faster online and even customers search the net using phrases which may look like sentences in some cases rather than entering one or two-words keywords into the search bars of the big internet engines. |

Yes you can rank for many keywords. But for this purpose your content on site must contain different variations of long tail.

That is a common misconception widely help by folks that are learning about how search engines work. It is one of those concepts many people seem to have difficulty getting their brain around. Search engines will rank the individual pages of a website, but the website itself isn't ranked, only the individual pages within the site. And yes, all of the pages of a website may in fact be indexed, it is inaccurate to say the "site" is ranked. It is more accurate to say the pages of the site are ranked. And each page, will usually rank for different keywords and hold different ranking positions.
