Default Is it worth doing a site for a high volume non commercial keyphrase ?

Has anyone got any experience of doing a site for a high volume but low competition keyphrase and just relying on hopefully the sheer number of pageviews it would get if I got it to position 1 on google ? then adding adsense or something to sell to the general public.

(the number of "exact match" global monthly searches is shown as 1,500,000 and uk local as 18,100 on the adwords keyword tool) which I don't believe completely, but as a guide it seems pretty high , right ?

Yeah, that seems really high.

But, if you are able to rank highly for a high-traffic keyword, using AdSense or some other tangentially-related affiliate offers is a great way to monetize it. Targeted Traffic = Money, so get all of it that you can. After you have steady traffic coming in, you can try various methods of monetizing it and see what works out the best.

Building a list might be a good thing to try as well.

18,000 is very low to make PPC money or anything. I have an experience with an animation keyword of 135,000 local exact and got over 600,000 PVs per month. Adsense was $1200+.

what you need to remember is that the website should have atleast the information which users want and make them visit 3-4 pages each.

remember you will get only 40% of the search traffic. that means you are getting approx. 7000-8000 visits per month and 200-300 visits per day. With 3-4 page views, you are getting like 1000+ PVs.

At 2% conversion, 20 clicks = not so much money. then again if you can try to go for amazon and clickbank products which will pay more at same conversion rates (i know the product is not commercial)

Hey,

A keyword with non commercial use is very hard to monetize unless you have extreme high search volume. I have one keyword that is #3 for a 22, 000 US local search term. The site gets about 200 - 300 visitors a day with about 1000+ page views. My earnings ON A GOOD DAY is maybe $5. The CTR is 2%.

I have played around with every adsense position available and have now come to a decent CTR. But my earnings are only $5. I would suggest that you be very careful. If you are not interested in the niche then don't do it as you will lose motivation.

I have learnt my lesson. The commercial intent must exist for high CTR.

The other perspective could be to offer a good product. Build an email list and figure out a way to monetize it that way.

Go for it and just monetize the site by creating your own product realted to the niche.

Thanks guys, should I ignore the high global search number which seems a lot higher in proportion to any other research I have done ?
