So I've been reading at a few places that non-original content on your domain can lower the ranking potential of your original content on the same domain. Then, if you want to post news stories or other syndicated content on your site, should you make sure they are "robot disallowed"?

Do a google search for NEWS. Google news is the second result. Not an original piece of content anywhere to be found. Be careful what you read. |

Yeah this is especially true now more than ever, google is really cracking down on the "cheap stuff" so to speak. honestly just focus on having content very high in quality from now on if you are already doing good.

Yeah If you'll be posting syndicated news like, it would be best to noindex the pages. Present your best face to the search engines. Always noindex thin pages like tags, user profiles, etc.

I have 2 sites where I regularly post syndicated content, by syndicated I mean giving full attribution to the source, along with my unique content. Not only is it okay the articles regularly rank well in Google. Anyone that tells you any differently doesn't know what they are speaking of. |

That is why they taught us how to summarize and paraphrase in school right?

providing syndicated content adds value to the sites readers and google understands that...which is something most people on this forum don't have a clue about.

Is it a good idea to set up an auto blog with nothing but useless content? Nope. If you have a great site and add a news feed with relevant press releases for your visitors, is that a good idea? Sure. People need to use some damn common sense around here!

i've found that you need to syndicating from the origional source of the news to get any benefit.. only syndicate from the source

What you heard is pure bull****. If you've got something that is valuable in relation to the theme of your website, you should share it. And you should be rewarded for that, not punished. So that's all fairy tales.

Here's a tip I learned back in print journalism school... it's called the "localize and rewrite" ... It's where you take a story or press release and use parts of it to create your own article. You can use the quotes in it, etc., as long as you give attribution. For example, if you come across a really good article in the New York Times that has a quote you like that fits into your niche ... use it like this: Jane Doe was quoted in a recent issue of the New York Times saying, "[keyword] really is making a difference in people's lives." This is 100% ok to do. You won't be sued. You will have unique content and it will be worth reading. This is especially true of company press releases. They are put out for that very reason - to be used and spread the word on their company or product. Cut and paste from press releases and use quotes from CEOs and experts. They add to your content and are free sources of authority. I gained a lot of traffic with long-tail keywords simply by reworking and quoting various press releases from an energy drink company ... every few weeks they'd publish a new one and every week, I had something new to talk about. I'd do the on-page SEO and before long I was outranking the corporate site. The key is proper attribution! |

Thanks to all who shared their experience in good rankings using syndicated content. It made no sense to me having to noindex stuff that I know will be valuable to my visitors.
