If it's something controversial, simply letting the social medias, ping.fm/onlywire make it viral, might suffice..

If not, sometimes writing 2-5 QUALITY articles and posting them MANUALLY, will be enough to start the snowball effect. In 2 months you could have a thousand backlinks, or at least 20+ all coming from different IPs. Article syndication can be very powerful and if you can't get automatic backlinks through syndication you're doing something wrong

Alternatively if your content is good, if you've done your keyword research, and if you've done a great job targetting long tail keyword phrases with low competition, your job is basically done. Just let it mature a little, focus your efforts elsewhere, and it'll be linked to, naturally, from forums, blogposts, emails etc. - the more efforts put into the initial and earlier stages of your campaigns, the easier it gets when it comes to syndicating and publishing your content.

If you want and thinks you need them, find a few high pr / edu / gov backlinks - getting a pr6 backlink from tumblr is perhaps one of the easiest things in the world, and I believe there'll be a thousand threads about already, if you search the forums.
Install SEO quake to soort the SERPS by PR or just spy on your competitors using marketsamurai or ahrefs.com of _W_

Personally, when I occationally step out of my role as a product creator, and back into the affiliate / seo ball game trying to get rankings, I focus 95% of my efforts on the initial stages, which means that I don't have to worry too much about getting backlinks.

:)
