My tip would be to pay special attention to Keyword Research. Selecting the proper keywords could make a difference between ranking #1 in 2 weeks and ranking #1 in 2 years. Proper keyword research will maximize the effect of your off-page SEO. A good tool to use is Google Adwords Keyword Tool.

My tip is to find keywordluv and commentluv enabled blogs in your niche and become regular commentator.

Keywordluv enabled blogs allow commentators to add their keywords next to their name. To find blogs that allow this you just have to search on Google something like ("keywordluv" "your keywords" ) or ( "keywordluv enabled" "your keyword" )

Commentluv enabled blogs allow commentators to link one of their 10 latest posts of their site on their comment. So the only thing you have to do is search on Google and find relevant commentluv enabled blogs to your site. Commenting on Commentluv enabled blogs will not only improve your seo but it will bring targeted traffic since you can choose which of your latest posts is more relevant to the page you want to leave a comment increasing the possibilities that people will visit your site.

The best thing from this strategy is that you get high pr links and most importantly from relevant pages to your site, and most SEO experts would agree that relevancy is even more important than just high PR pages and will help you get high rankings on search engines easier...

Don't ever spam backlinks because google will see it as spam. Rather get an awesome keyword and put in a few backlinks. Once you have done that let the site sit for about 1 month, then start adding more quality backlinks.

Have more than 400 well constructed words paragraphs on your home page

Look at the platform you are on example: Wordpress is a cracker for SEO however terrible for security for ecommerce websites

Title your images

Title your sub pages properly

Bold a few key words here and there

Have a you tube video / or a video on your page for keeping browsers on site longer

Careful of outbound links on your home page

Have all the social media icons pumping for you

Maintain site , maintain maintain maintain

Love your site it will love you back

Regarding Ahrefs for counting a backlinks - it doesn't show about a half of a backlinks comparing with yahoo explorer that passed away. Try another service for that.
