Default My competitor is a static page, I am a blog

does this mean, assuming that they do no backlink building and that I regularly make updates with keywords in them, that I will eventually rank no.1 for that keyword?

I ask because I'm in a niche with only static pages and I have rapidly gone from No. 38 to No. 2 by doing nothing more than adding content every week or so.

Nothing special about blog vs. static site. If they do no link building and you do, that's why you'll rank higher. Your advantage is you can target additional keywords by simply adding content, and as your pages build PR (assuming your building links) you can spread that around your site.

First of all, kiwiviktor81, CONGRATULATIONS ON A #2 POSITION!!!!! That's awesome!

Two things that Google likes are lots of content and good SEO. One of the advantages of blogs is that it is easy to add content to them. That in itself can be the reason why your site is ranking high. You are consistently adding content and that is seen as having a quality, valuable site to Google. The SEO is just icing on the cake for this type of site.

Unfortunately, now that Yahoo Site Explorer is gone, I'm not totally sure how to check your competitor's backlinks to see what they're doing. I have a few tools that I've been using, but haven't been totally impressed by what they're coming up with.

Yes, focus on using your keywords and making sure to add in some LSI keywords and you'll be at the top in no time!

Keep up the good work and BRAVO!

Best,
Adrienne

P.S. Love the background in your photo!

In Google's latest publicized algorithm update, they are putting more weight on fresh content... so that is definitely an advantage you have.

As ahew, dtang4 and packerfan mentioned in their post, that fresh content is always give benefits for all of the sites to help in improving their position.

i have checked kiwiviktor81's profile and his website about quite smoking. All the blog related to quite smoke and the adequate effect to our brain and other organs are considered points. Today we are seeming in straight by our eyes that quite smoke is very hard by a chain smoker. so all the blogs focusing for live saving category . Really all those blogs are valuable for people who searching a way to quite smoking.

And one more place where his site getting more gain is links page. in his he added two high page rank site related quite smoking. this is too have to be considered by site Google to give standard track to keep in standard position.

kiwiviktor81 is following the right way in his SEO work to go ahead in major SE.

My best wishes for your real work and Happy New Year kiwi.

Have a source for that? I have a static site I have not updated in years that is killing the competition. Care to explain that?

In general I think folks need to use some common sense here. There are certain kinds of searches where freshness is the most important factor. Things like news events, sports scores, etc. Obviously google is going to give a higher weighting to freshness for these queries.

However, if you search for "who won WWII" I doubt Google cares if some published a post yesterday about it or 10 years ago. Not like the outcome changed...

Broad generalizations do nothing but cause people to waste time worrying about the wrong stuff.

Static pages are search engine friendly. But you will get an edge if you keep adding fresh content frequently.

Assuming all factors are the same, a site that adds fresh content versus one that does not will rank higher.

This of course is assuming we are in a vacuum with no outside factors, which of course is not the case in the real world.

Before concluding anything, I want to ask that are you sure the time you were checking your ranking you did not get personalized results.

Anyways, Content updation helps a lot in improving website ranking. Sometimes, your niche has nothing much to write about... It doesn't mean you cannot rank high. There are many other techniques like,
- Link building
- Social media optimization
- Feed submission
- Social bookmarking etc.

I am certain I wasn't getting personalised results - I used different computers, different I.P addresses, Traffic Travis, Rank Checker, and disabled the Web History and personalised results tabs on Google.

Cheers everyone for the extra pointers, though.
