On a small site it's probably not "that" important. But when it comes to having thousands or millions of pages it helps the bots a lot. A good old fashioned HTML sitemap might even help a user from time to time. |

For me it depends how big the site is whether you even need one. I have a lot of small niche sites and I don't even bother, for example if you have a 10 page site on Wordpress theres no point in having one, the sites navigation is good anyway, people make a really big deal about needing one but I have never seen any evidence of this, unless you have a big site to help bots crawl all your content. Hope this helps |

Just to add to the posts above. A full blown sitemap is not that important with a small site but you probably do want some type of internal linking using the keyword you are targeting for each page.

The sitemap helps google's robots to visit your site faster and it's easier for them. that way, the bots can visit all the internal pages you include in the map even if your inner linking strategy has left an internal page out. In order for SE's to find it quickly I guess I would put a link to it on my Home page as well |

Using sitemaps has many benefits, not only easier navigation and better visibility by search engines. Sitemaps offer the opportunity to inform search engines immediately about any changes on your site. Of course, you cannot expect that search engines will rush right away to index your changed pages but certainly the changes will be indexed faster, compared to when you don't have a sitemap.

A link on every page to a site map that then lists links to every page can feed the search engines a lot of information. Although this does not guarantee a 100% complete index of your site, it goes a long way toward it.

Sitemaps are simply "road maps" that search engines can use to navigate their way through the various parts and sections of a website. The sitemap essentially tells the search engines where the various pages are located on the site. This is particularly important for websites that have multi-level navigation, which automated spiders might have difficulty with. Ins and Outs of Sitemaps - Ins and Outs of Internet Sitemaps |

I LOVE sitemaps. A sitemap is the place that contains ALL your pages, so I happen to believe it may be the single most important page you have beyond your index page. It's like if Google were a pig, it's going to jump straight into the bucket with all the acorns in it instead of grazing around for one at the time. On my static sites I not only have the regular HTML sitemap, but also the XML version for Google. Both versions are targeted by the search engines. On occasion I have even linked to my HTML sitemap from articles and such, since EVERYTHING is there in one place. Sitemaps are a GOOD thing. Norm |
