Default Technique for absolutely capturing a keyword phrase on-site? Has anyone ever used this?

Yesterday, as I was searching for ways to watch movies online of all things, I stumbled on a site that was coming up rather highly in the SERP's for a phrase related to what I was looking for.

Which piqued my curiosity as the site itself was no big deal. So I took a closer look.

The page I stumbled upon was a post among something like 50 other posts listed in the sidebar. All about the same thing.

For example let's say my page was "How to watch movies online". In the sidebar there links to 50 other pages (roughly) with titles like...

Watching movies online for free
Do you want to watch movies online?
Online movie watching
Movies online for free
Best places to watch movies online

And so on.

I didn't do any hard analysis on how much having so many similar links helped the page I was on rank highly but am wondering...

Has anyone else ever used such a technique. Of absolutely bombing a keyword phrase on one site with multiple versions of the same thing?

I mean multiple versions of pages that cover essentially the same topic?

Any cons to this approach?

Does Google pick that up as spammy? I realize that the determination of this is mainly a guess but has anyone had any experience of that seeming to be the case with this technique.

I think I will try this and see how it works for a keyword phrase I have been thinking of targeting unless anyone has anything definite to say against this approach.

Thanks.

Google rank posts not the site.So he has optimized each post for each keyword.

Yes but I was mainly wondering if having so many pages covering a very similar topic clumped together on a site would up the ranking of those site pages overall for the subject being covered by those pages?

Actually an identical topic where each page is just slightly different. Almost like spinning one page and making it ten on one site.

Verses writing just one page on a topic at the site. It stands to reason that having ten almost identical pages but technically different would be better than having one but I don't know how Google takes such a "technique". Not a big deal. I was just wondering if anyone here had ever done this kind of thing and what their experience of it had been.

Link to the site would help, but I'm betting it's something related to the ideas in this thread...
