Default Keyword Question

So, I know what keywords I want to work with. The only thing I'm confused about is how can I tell where I currently rank in google, and how can I see when there is improvement?

You could use a tool like RankChecker which is a firefox extension if you use that.
Otherwise there are alternatives like Market Samouraï.

That's what I used,

I would suggest investing in market samurai to check your rankings. They also have tons of other stats that are extremely important. You can check out the front page competition in extreme detail. You can look at thousands of search engine competition stats in minutes and you can look at a important stat called phrase to broad match.

Let me write a high quality SEO optimized 500 word article for you for $20. PM or email me for samples. I am available to do multiple high quality articles per day. I look forward to working with you and thank you for taking the time to read this...

A good free alternative to market samurai is traffic travis, but this more for when you are looking where you are in the top 20 position. However, it's still a great free tool to have in your toolbox, and it has a quite a few good features.

You took the words right out of my mouth Their are other more expensive tools but Rankchecker and Market Samurai are good to start with.

Try not to worry too much about where you rank for a particular keyword. Worry about how much money you are making. That's the most important statistic!

You can check your website ranking with Google webmaster tools... Its free and pretty accurate. But it will give your ranking for Google only.

For Yahoo and other Search engine ranking, you may try with 'Keyword Country'. Also, you can monitor your performance by ‘scheduling’ your campaigns.

As others have said, there are ways to check.

However, what really matters is how much profit you're making, and the search engine position can confuse the issue, because a lower position for one keyword, might make you much more MONEY than a higher position for a different keyword. Of course, to some extent you can try to get as high a position as you can for all your keywords, but you might do better testing which keywords make you the most MONEY, and aim the whole site towards optimizing for those keywords specifically.

All keywords are not equal, in terms of conversions and profits, so make sure you are aiming at what really matters, rather than working on getting high on the search engine results for some keywords which will never make you much money.

There's plenty of services that you can grab and use for free. I know we offer 10 keywords for free. Don't want to pitch you since you asked the Q, so if you want more info feel free to check my signature.

Just watch with downloaded programs though, as they're most likely going to be personalized by using your IP if you don't use proxies - and you'll start to see yourself around #4 when you're really #50+.

If you don't mind making a small investment I would definatley recommend Market Samurai as it has many great uses including the keyword ranker (to check your rankings in Google,Yahoo and Bing).
