Mike is right above, but half my network consists of domains that were dropped and the PR has stuck and even has gone higher. I have tremendous luck with dropped domains. There's one VERY important aspect when buying a domain with PR. And this applies to a dropped domains and non-dropped domains.

When you buy either of these, make sure to private register these domains right away. When Google sees change of ownership (and yes they do), they tend to de-value these domains. Now, PR might come back in time but I've never waited that long to find out (actually I've never wanted to wait to see how long that would take). I ALWAYS private register a domain that I bought for it's PR if it's dropped or non-dropped.

Don solid post and something I wanted to look into deeper because the reports and experiences as I indicated have been contradictory.

I would have to say that about 90% of the domains I buy and private register keep their PR. There are those few that go down, but sometimes I think it's mainly because they have lost backlinks.

I'm testing a few though. I'm seeing if they keep their PR after the private reg lapses after a year, and then they become a non-private registration. In which thus far they haven't lost their PR.

When building a network it makes sense to keep them private so as their are no footprints. No registration in google webmaster tools or google analytics. So far I have stayed away from namejet and snapnames but I may throw $50-100 around there just to see how it goes.

As for private registration I use godaddy to register most of my domains, but I also have used namecheap and like the simple interface alot better and their privacy cost is alot cheaper too. I might transfer the domains there, but transferring out to a different registrar is a big pain in the rear when I have done it in the past.

What do you mean by "private register"? Are you talking about registering domains with whois protection?

I have had good luck getting good dropped domains from NameJet. But when you do that your domain registrars are going to be either Network Solutions or enomCentral. And let me tell you, their domain renewal fees are in fact INSANE! $35 for each domain renewal. Thank god that's only 1 time a year!

I do have most than a few domains with GoDaddy, but that's because I bought them in bulk from someone who was building a high PR network and then gave up. But I'm sure it helps to have a network with domains from different registrars. It hides the footprint as well.

Yes I am. Private registering your High PR domains is the best thing you can do right after you buy them. Or else there's a high chance that you will lose the PR.

Yeah, low out bound links are something to definitely to consider. That's why I don't like buying high PR blog comments. Those PR7 pages usually have 200 - 300+ comments.

Why not transfer the domains to other registrars that charge the normal $10 or so yearly renewal? I know its a pain but will save you money in the long run.

There's lots of great info in this thread. I'm going to have to dig through it again to digest it all. Great tip about private registering high pr domains to keep the PR up.

Here is my Two Penneth.

Pagerank is not important for SERPS, not at all, but I agree it looks nice.
PR3 or better and I am happy, but it is not important for SERPS position.

Pagerank does allow you to sell Blogroll links and the sort, and get fairly reasonable money too, a PR3 blogroll link is an easy $5 / month.

6 on a site, $30 / month = $1 /day.

500 sites...

Anyway, I can tell you from experience, it is content that counts the most, followed by the content on the sites that link to you, and that it turn link to them.

Otherwise called relevance.

I have so far built about 140 sites for a number of clients, each is interconnected to the others by Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools and many are monitized with Asense, all using the same code.

So Google knows.. Without doubt that the sites are part of a network.

Amazingly, only the sites with good content rank in search....

All the sites are under 9 months old and some of them are on page 1 for some pretty good searches and given these are for SEO primarily that tells a story in itself.

However, even the poor sites definately provide SEO benefits, it is easy to see as we are targeting different keywords from different "groups" of domains.

So it depends on what you want, if you want to sell links then you really want Pagerank because it make the links easier to sell. But if you want SEO benefit from the network then go for content, the pagerank will come on its own.

As for buying sites with Pagerank, I guess that's ok if you research the domain and it's the right price, but in my experience, pagerank can be built to PR3/4 pretty easily within 90 days for about $100, so why pay more for it.

I would prefer a niche related, PR0 with 100 relevant backlinks than a PR5 that isn't related.

I can build a niche related PR0 with 100 backlinks for $100 very quickly.

I use xMarkpro for the backend management, it makes domain setup almost 1 click, automatically adds the cPanel Addon domain, installs Wordpress or your custom site, plugins, theme, even posts and pages.

Couple of clicks.

$100 would cover, domain, hosting, content and some carefully selected backlinks.

Then just post on the site once a week, odd link here and there, relevant, (not forgetting you can anchor links from the rest of the network if they're relevant, and wait.

If the content is any good, links will come for free.

Don't know if that helps, I hope it does, but it really depends on what you want the network for.

T

Theres some things in your post that are solid and some that is just way off. yes you can build up PR to sites but the "pretty easily" ways of doing it tend not to last. Basically alot of those services just blast comments on blogs with PR and the deletion and nofollow rate on that is way too high to last.

umm I'll take the PR5 and use it to get all kinds of relevant higher PR links I want to any site I want

To me building a PR 0 site for $100 is way over paying

Enom is a bit cheaper than networksolutions, at ~$20/year.

My main issue is Network Solutions forces you to show your name for registration, as 'privacy' only hides the address. I suppose you could use a business name, but then they're still all connected with that info.

Seems like you're not transferring these out for your network--seeing no side effects from that?

How are others here handling this?

Perhaps an attic I shall seek.

Is it seriously that easy?! Something tells me it's not. I mean, according to your estimates, you would need 3000 people paying you $30 a month in order to make that $500 a day (6 links on a site times 500 sites). I would think that it would be very hard to be able to get 3000 people to pay $30 a month a on a consistent basis.

However, I could totally be wrong and this could be a very realistic thing. Were you serious when you posted that, or were you pretty much poking fun at the "backlink selling" business model?

Anyone else who is experienced on this can feel free to lend their input as well.

Sounds like a nightmare unless you have automated software to handle all link adding, anchor text changes, transferring links from dead domains, cancelled subs.

You are right that in that I very much doubt anyone is making $500/day from selling blogroll links for $5 a pop.

There is certainly good money to be made from HPBL networks and the like, though.

I've always wondered if a piece of software exists that can manage the links in a link network. I've heard that some people use AMR to post content to their private blog network, but that doesn't explain how you would REMOVE links when people stop paying for their subscription.

Does such a software exist? Or is everyone that runs a private link network like homepagebacklinks doing the update manually every month. That would suck!

Don't need to. Most of these services put you on the home page for a short time. They just post some more articles on the page and eventually your links roll right off to some where the search engine rarely go to
