Just figured I'd share something I found interesting with you guys. I have a niche website that after finally reaching position 1, ended up with some terrible results. I noticed tons of traffic and pageviews pouring in, but there were pretty much no clicks. We're talking about a <1% CTR here. It took me awhile to realize why this probably was but after reviewing stats for the site I noticed that 73.54% of my visitors were coming from mobile devices. Not sure if this is common but the website is in a health/fitness niche, more specifically about a problem someone can have. So, it makes sense... the users are looking up my website immediately from their cellphones. I really thought this was going to be a goldmine but apparently not. So, I guess it's just a heads up to think about the context in which your end user will be searching for your website.Maybe I'm wrong and this isn't actually why, let me know what you guys think! |

Hmmm interesting. You may still be able to monetize for cell phone devices. There are adsense ads for mobile devices, but I have never attempted to use them because I have never run into this problem yet. I wouldn't let it go to waste if you are already getting traffic. |

So try to find some affiliate networks specially for mobile websites, they have appropriate ads for mobile devices, you still can monetize via them. And if you have qulity contents, RSS and subscribe tools would be necessary, stick with visitors and build a list, then you will have more choices to monetize from the list.

Why mobile websites, mobile optimization or mobile banners? Todays smartphones can display sites exactly as your PC, it's just the font is 5x times smaller and you usually have to scroll a lot through huge sites. Mobile optimization is a huge waste of time and resources according to me, after all, companies producing smartphones are trying hard on their side already to get rid of that crappy mobile browsers, which in 75% cases totally ruined the page. If you open any AdSense page in a newer smartphone, Google ads will display normally, you can normally even click on those. Your earnings might be low, because people coming through phones aren't paying attention to your banners or ads, simply because the screen device is small already so why bother browsing through ads, they went to your web simply for the content. When I browse through my smartphone, I never ever click on any ads, because my experience is that it will redirect me to some weirdo site I didn't want to visit anyway and loading speed on phones isn't that great anyway, after all, this mobile internet was meant for some quick checking for your mails, tweets or Facebook, but not really for browsing the net, it's way too much pain in the ass using some not even 5" display to view large sites. On the other hand, when I browse on my laptop, with mouse and everything, I often find myself clicking on some random ads, AdSense, etc. It's way faster and more comfortable. Also, I think, even if your site gets over a million views daily, that doesn't necessarily mean, those people will be interested in clicking on your AdSense, they might come, read your blog and leave peacefully, no clicks at all, which leads to another thing, ads must be offered and presented to the visitors, so the banners and ad blocs would get their attention and yet you cannot break AdSense TOS, damn that.
