All green except backlinks

I'm looking at a Certain keyword relating to my site and I looked at the SEO Competition module in MS and for the second spot on the first page its all green except one and that would be backlinks. It has over 15K backlinks, do you think I can beat it as a newbie?

First site I ever did had a bunch of reds on the first 5 sites on MS. And those sites have been there since 1999, by the way. 2 of them have at least 30k backlinks...

I went ahead and did the site because it is my area of expertise so i figured it would be a learning experience. I have about 12 pages on that blog with articles that are at least 1100 words, 1 page has 2 videos I created, and I made sure that all the pages are optimized.

AS it was my first site, I was doing manual back linking by doing comments on relevant blogs, web 2.0 properties pyramids, forum commenting (no spamming), and i did like 10 article submissions. About 6 months later i was on the first page, and been google dancing there for last 3 months. By the way, my content was picked by some sites which have high PR and they linked back to my site, so that probably helped too.

Bottom line, as a total noob, I was able to make it to the first page and displace a couple of those monster sites, so I'm sure you can do it too, as long as you have good and smart content.

if the admin dont me posting this i would be trying to get mmohuts spot that has 15k backlinks

It is shame that you are saying "do you think I can beat it as a newbie?".Don't ever underestimate yourself.You definitely can do it.You just need hard determination to perform it.
