Default Is this a dumb strategy?

I'm still in the stage of fiddling around with AdSense placement. My strategy was to have a single skyscraper ad to the far right of the page, as unobtrusive as possible, for the sake of maximising the visitor experience. The idea with this was that people would be more likely to come back if they didn't notice the ads.

Then I decided to experiment by adding a banner at the top and shifting the skyscraper from the right to the left of the page, i.e. into a more attractive area according to Google's heat map.

What I want to know is, was my original idea of having low-impact ads in the hope of pleasing the visitor and getting more return traffic stupid? I am starting to think it was.

It depends on what you want for your site. If you want a clean visitor experience then no it's not stupid but if you want to make money you have to put the ads right in their face where they can see it.
