Default SERP

How come some sites which don't have much content on their homepage rank higher than my blog which has well onpage and off page optimization? I rank #5. All the sites above are companies' sites. They dont have keywords on their pages even. Why then don't mine rank higher which is highly optimized for keyword?

The companies' sites are probably better established in the SERPs than your site - they may have older domains and more indexed backlinks to them.

So, what you can do is try to outrank them with high-quality backlinks with higher PR (preferrably, not necessarily) and be adding some fresh content regularly.

Their SERP may have a higher value of quality backlinks and domain authority.

Their overall authority is probably far higher than yours due to being longer established. They may also have better domains in terms of higher age, closer match to the term, etc.

If you're targeting a highly searched/lucrative phrase, don't expect to beat the competition easily with on-site SEO. It may take several months if not years of SEO work to ultimately win out (though it'd be worth it once you have the ranking!).

There are a number of factors that make up SEO. Content is only a small part of this. This is why you will have some sites ranking without too much content if they have good backlinks coming in, or are well optimized in other ways.

It depends on many factors. Ranking a site is done on the basis on Domain age, numbers of backlinks, quality on links, PR of the site and many more other factors.

Most likely is the fact that they have a large amount of high pr homepage backlinks with low OBL's targetting the keyword. Use SEO spyglass or Ahrefs to measure quality of links.

I see this all the time with sites having 4000 backlinks outranking sites with 50,000.
