Default What might Google do to make sure you're not stealing images from other websites?

Of course, they'd penalize your rankings for that and it could even mean legal problems.

If you see an image you'd really like to use on your own website, is it best to edit it first? because I know there is TinEye which does its best to do Reverse Image Searches.

So Google's spiders could have a similar technology to see if you're ripping off images... right?

Of course, you make it obvious you're using an image on another site when you put the URL of it as it is on the other site in IMG SRC.

Google doesn't care who the image belongs to, you can verify this by searching for a keyword on Google Images then clicking the "more images" when you mouseover an image.

Example I searched for the keyword car, the first image has 110 exact copies of the ranked image, most copies have been scaled up/down & are on different sites.

car - Google Search

Legal issues are between the two parties involved.

BTW, you can't just take an image from Google images & post it on your site, that's stealing. Google will filter public domain images on the advanced image search.

Yes i agree with you. Legal issues are between the two parties involved. Google only care with the text content. Your web will have high PR if it has original content even with very less backlinks.
