How is this possible? Since the third week of December my travel blog is in page 1 (currently #7) for a long tail keyword phrase that gets over 1 million searches per month (according to Google adwords), and this is when I put semi collons around the phrase- otherwise adwords says it gets 1.5 million. However, I am only getting about 40 to 50 clicks per day. How is this possible? I have a relevant meta description and so is the title. I am very confused about this because I thought I'd be getting at least 1000 per day, if not many more. Any ideas? |

Did you try running the term in quotes when doing the search volume research?

How are you checking your SERP position? You can't do it using google on your own browser. It will always show on the first page once you've frequented. Get a third party site to get your SERP.

Like mentioned above, you've probably made the classic "Broad Search" mistake. When you check a keyword in Google Keyword tool, you must have "Exact" box checked to get accurate results.

Definitely not looking at the exact match search results for that specific keyword phrase. Go back to the keyword tool, type in your phrase and check the "Exact" box then hit Search - this will give you the real estimated amount of searches on that exact keyword. Also, ranking #7 isn't where the traffic is at. Getting on page one isn't enough. Keep working on driving that up to the top spot, and you will see more traffic come through as a result. Even in the top 3, the difference in click throughs from one spot to another is HUGE! |

| You can use your own browser, but you have to be logged out of Google and use something like CCleaner to clean your cache, cookies, etc. so you don;t end up retrieving 'favored' search results.

I get a kick out of all the products and gurus promoting ways to "get on page one." Big deal! Show me how to get to #1 or go home! The bottom of page one isn't going to do a whole lot for you.

Hi all, thanks for the comments. So, I performed the adwords tool search checking the "exact search" box and it again says the search has 1million searches per month. I had mentioned that I had indeed placed the keyword phrase in collons, otherwise adwords says the search is requested 1.5 million times. As for making sure my blog is in the first page of the results, I have asked a friend who's in Bali and another who's in Europe and both confirm that my site is in the first page. I realize thus that what I am experiencing makes no sense... any more ideas? |

ok so thats 30k searches /day #1 site gets 60% so thats theoretically 18k hits I would say #10 site might get 2% so thats maybe still 600 hits /day perhaps your title and description sucks? |

If the top three results are getting all the clicks you may be doing well to be getting what you're getting. What if position no 1 fits perfectly the search criteria? There's no way anybody's going to scroll down "off the fold" to position 7. Like people mentioned above, page one doesn't necessarily mean Jack. That's after the caveats that google kw tool is accurate in its stats for that keyword, that you are checking and ranking for exact match, that your title and description "cry out" to be clicked and that personalised results or local results are not skewing your stats. It's a tough lesson. Try to improve your rank and see how the traffic increases. But don't flog a dead horse. BTW, if you really are getting 40/50 visitors per day - there may be a way to monetise that or use it as part of a personal network. All's not lost - you'll just have to test more and see if you can either improve the rankings or make use of those visitors in another way. P.S. If you're trying to rank for a keyword that has that many searches for a "Phrase Match" perhaps you're not hitting the "right phrase" / "right phrases". Try writing more content and adding it to the site using variations on the phrase and see if you can get further traffic that way. Don't rely on the one keyword phrase - hit many variations of it and additions to it and you'll find more traffic - some of it much easier to rank for than your main keywords. |

Hi all, thanks for all the feedback. Well, know what, turns out several of you were right about the use I was doing of the keyword tool. I was checking another button (I'm using the tool in another language) and turns out the the one I had to check for the exact match is on the left, not under it. So I did check where I was supposed to and...the number is wayyyy different, so different it is almost embarassing. With this new number that fact that I am getting 40 clicks per day means I am getting most of them, despite not being at the top. What a dissapointment. Anyhow, I will try different variations as DPM70 suggests, see what I get, and will have to re-do my SEO plan accordingly. By the way, may this be a lesson for thos of you who thought that by including the collons you are performing an exact match search- not true. Also, the article linked does give a lot of light, thus some other keyword tools might be better... Thanks for all your support, much appreciated! |

Another thing you should be looking at is NOT putting all of your hope with ONE keyword. If you want to get loads and loads of traffic, you need to look at getting many many different keywords on to the front page of Google, and into the top 3 if you can. This is the same concept of putting all of your eggs in one basket. If you have 100 keywords that are ranking on the first page of Google ( hopefully in the top 3 ) and a few of them lose rank you won't be hurting so much. But if that one single "golden" keyword you have put all of your hopes and dreams into falls just a little bit, you will see a drastic change in traffic, and income. You've got that keyword on the first page, and its getting 40 clicks a day? Great, now work on another, and then another, and keep going until you suck all the traffic you can to your website for that topic. -- Jeff |
