I will always buy domains with godaddy. They are cheap and give great discounts on a regular basis and it is easy to manage my domains.

They are known to demand $200 , or hey better yet they will SELL (auction) your domain (which they do not own , by the way) The only way any registrar OWNS a domain you registered with them is if they let THREE MONTHS go by after the expiration date, the domain goes up for grabs to ANYONE with 10 bucks, and they get it and register it in their name. Otherwise they have no right to YOUR domain

Namecheap is the best most highly recommended registrar, you wont find complaints about Namecheap. \

You guys are missing out on a great other option - Netfirms. Been awhile a long time nice interface no problems with them and they almost always have coupons that allow me to buy all my domains with privacy for under $5.

What you say below is very true.I have never had a problem with Namecheap either.I think Hostgator is really good as is Coolhandle.

I had a domain expire at namecheap,
It was 6 wks past expiration date, google had deindexed it

if this had been Godaddy? the wolves scammers would have extorted me for $200 , that is if they had not already auctioned the domain (which was not theirs to auction)

Namecheap? I emailed them, asked them about renewing it. they said, sure put $10 into your account and we will re activate the domain. I did, and they reactivated it within that same day. Google subsequently reindexed the site, same place as it was before

Namecheap doesnt fk with their customers and try to scam them. Godaddy, ...on the other hand.................

Namecheap, everytime.

Nice quick website not bloated down trying to sell me other deals.

The don't constantly try to email me with offers (more bloaty html emails).

They don't support SOPA and have backbone unlike godaddy backtracking their views as soon as it hit their business.

hosting? who uses registrars to host their sites?
most people use hosts to host their site, Godaddy is not a host, neither is namecheap, though they might offer those services

I have registered all my domains with GoDaddy but have considered NameCheap because I've heard good things about them. I did have one problem with an expired domain with GoDaddy several years ago and did not like the way they handled it ... they wanted to charge me $90 to get it back. Lesson learned >>> don't let your prized domains expire!

I like the convenience of having all my domains listed in one place and the discounts aren't bad either with GoDaddy. However, I think registering domains and using GoDaddy to host your domains would be a disaster. I use HostGator for hosting my domains.

I would be lying if I said I did not like some of the features at GoDaddy. I have not personally had any of the nightmares, but have read about a few. That having been said, you need to think a bit about long term costs if you are really going to use your domains. May be a small part of your annual spend, but why throw away money that could be applied to your sites.

Example: I have 60 domains renewing next month and GoDaddy is asking about $1100 for renewal. My .info domains were purchased for $1.99, now $8.99, .net is $9.99, .com "on sale" at $7.99, and Privacy/WhoIs is $9.99 a domain. The Privacy alone is $600 on the renewal . . . making it more than the actual domain registration fees of $500.

$9 avg for domain renewal, but add in the $9.99 WhoIs and you are at $18.99/URL.

By contrast the .com, .net and .org with WhoIs Privacy is $9.79 (avg)/URL at NameCheap. 60 domains @ $9.79 is about $585.


Bottom Line: Saves me $500 to go with NameCheap on the renewal. Almost half price of GoDaddy.

I had a issue with Netfirms.I'm not gonna say it sucks.But this is the issue I had

I purchased a EMD and slept.When I checked in the morning there was a msg call pending or somthing.So I bought the domain again from namecheap or godday and asked for a refund

Netfirms said they had a issue with the system.

I purchase most of my domains on Go Daddy using the numerous coupons that are available. Was using them for hosting, but their hosting was so slow that I ditched them for Host Gator.

The 1 year free Whois guard is a pretty sweet deal from Name Cheap. I will try them out on my next domain buying spree.

I've been using GoDaddy for years and never had a problem (and just ignore all the adds and upsells during the checkout process). However, I recently needed an SSL certificate for a project and heard that one could be obtained cheaply on NameCheap with the purchase of a domain. So I just got a .info domain and got the SSL certificate for only a few dollars more, and found that I loved NameCheap. It was so much simpler to use than GoDaddy and has the free WhoIs guard for a year and many other nice features. I believe I'll be using them from now on. I'm only sorry I didn't discover how great NameCheap is sooner.

Namecheap support is phenomenal. So +1 for Namecheap

Godaddy seems to be popular from all the posts above, never tried them and never will.

Why? In one of the first training I had on Online marketing, Mike Filsaime described his experience with them when his account got hacked and he was in the middle of a product launch.....very unpleasant. That put me off

They will try to steal the domain and auction it (they dont own the domain you do)............or the will try to extort you for 100-200 dollars to get it back (IMO illegal) how are they saying to get it back? they dont own it



I just transferred a domain to Namecheap from Directnic, not because I dont like Directnic, well their prices are too high but its just one domain i dont mind paying few bucks more
but they stopped accepting Paypal, and Namecheap accepts Paypal

I had to have my mom renew my resort domain on Directnic with her credit card, since it was too close to the expiry date to transfer it
now that its renewed, I am transferring it to Namecheap
only thing is, far as I know the year I paid for on Directnic, (only started last week) is wasted because Namecheap is re registering it with Namecheap, so I paid 10 bucks for that, oh well

Go on any webmaster board, the will tell you Namecheap rocks
but most people who are not webmasters have not really heard of them, they are small, they dont have a huge ad budget anyone looking for a registrar who takes the time to research customer service complaints on Google , will choose Namecheap over Godaddy

I tell you what I will go google Horror stories for both Godaddy and Namecheap

I guarantee you the results for Godaddy will go on for days
Namecheap I doubt you will find many complaints

namecheap doesnts screw with their customers or try to steal expired domains (extort them)
Godaddy does that every day, its just their business model

first of all Godaddy has no right to auction the domain,
the domain if it "expires" has 90 days going through various states until it becomes available to re register. Then it becomes available for ANYONE to register, and No, the current registrar is not first in line, they have to get in line like everyone else. So this auctioning of expired domains is a scam that is allowed to operate somehow. and stupid people BUY...these expired domains, (notice they do not guarantee that you get the domain? thats because they do not own the domain to auction it) they are hoping to register the domain once it comes off of PENDING DELETE, then they can give it to you. (if they manage to be the first one to re register the domain, which is by NO means guaranteed) ANYONE can register that domain once it goes off pending delete. (90 days from the day the domain originally expires). So Godaddy "auctioning" the domain, how are they auctioning somethign they do not yet own? and may never own?

Godaddy reallizes most people have no clue about the complicated process domains go through after the initially expire. So they prey on this ignorance. Also people assume since Godaddy is a registrar of this domain that has "expired" they must be able to auction it. IMO the ONLY reason they get away with "auctioning" these domains is that they have to refund the persons money if they dont manage to snag the domain once it comes up for grabs to ANYONE with 10 dollars.

I guarantee you a person could wreak havoc by waiting around for those expired domains to come off of pending delete and then snatching them up before Godaddy manages to register them (after they have already "auctioned"
them)

Also Godaddy lets you "reserve" domains, for $18, go research this. If you do not get the domain? They will NOT refund your $18 , if thats not a scam I dont know what is. Oh wait in the fine print it says getting the domain is not guaranteed. Then whats the $18 fee for? the privelage of hoping Godaddy MIGHT register a domain? You can get any domain yourself by just knowing the exact time domains become available, and waiting, you have to wait EXACTLY 90 days from the day the domain intially expired though, takes a bit of planning/
Feedback on webmaster boards report that about 90 percent of the time, the webmasters paying this "reserve" fee, DONT get the domain. And they DONT get their money back. This "reserve a domain" is a huge money maker for godaddy.

All I can say is FLEE NOW! Because of the most recent horror story concerning GoDaddy, I decided to quickly and quietly transfer my domains to NameCheap.
What happened?
An Internet marketer had his account suspended by GoDaddy because of a spam complaint. The spam didn’t come from him — it came from an unknown third party.
GoDaddy promptly shut down his domain (NOT the website… the freakin domain!) and sent the following email…

Go Daddy has a strict anti-spam policy, Go Daddy customers are required to be able to provide conclusive proof of prior consent for any individual they send advertisements to. This also applies to the actions of any party that generates traffic on your behalf. This includes, but is not limited to, 3rd party marketers, business partners, employees, mailing list providers and affiliates.

Once the troubled marketer posted in the forum, other marketers with similar GoDaddy horror stories came out of the woodwork.
What did I learn?
1. It only takes one spam *complaint* to have your domain suspended by GoDaddy. There doesn’t need to be proof.
2. Once GoDaddy locks and suspends your account, you are billed $200 in administration fees in order to unlock and/or move to another registrar.
3. GoDaddy has suspended and sold high value domain names, for invalid whois information. Specifically an email address — without trying to contact using any other means.
4. If there is problem, don’t expect a phone call from ‘customer no-service’!
5. GoDaddy verifies ‘whois’ information using the domain SecureServer.net. One domain owner received an email originating from that domain and ignored it not knowing it was GoDaddy — which seems resonable given all the phishing scams. However, his site was shut down.
And don’t think this is an isolated incident. It has happened repeatedly…
Ask Mike Filsaime what he thinks about GoDaddy.com and you will get an earful!
Like other Internet marketers, I have already moved my most valuable domains to NameCheap and made the ‘whois’ info private as another layer of protection. Maybe you should do the same.

The original owner has 42days to get access to the domain after it expires, like every other registrar. If you want the domain within that time and you pay the appropriate fees then it is yours. Godaddy is not the only company that charges a fee to retrieve an expired domain.

After the 42days is up (it can be as low as 30) the registrar now owns the domain during this redemption period. This is when they can auction or sell the domain.

The article you linked to is from a disgruntled customer. I, like you, don't know any of the details of what actually happened there.

Godaddy follows the appropriate rules/laws for expiring domains and if you did a bit of research you'll know what the process involves.

ONLY AFTER IT GOES UP FOR GRABS................TO ANYONE WITH 10 BUCKS

can they even attempt to register the domain to Godaddy
and they do not have first rights to the domain ANYONE CAN REGISTER IT, FIRST COME FIRST SERVE

so their "auction" of the domain is just a bet

1. they "auction" the domain even though they have no right to it
2. they wait until it comes up for grabs
3. they HOPE they get it when it does
4, IF....IF ...they manage to be the first one to grab the domain, and there is no guarantee of this
then they give you the domain you "won" in the auction

6, If they cant manage to be the one to get the domain? someone else gets it? they simply refund you your money
thats how they get away with "auctioning" the domain





People are stupid enough to think they have some magical ownership rights to the domain . ONLY IF THEY ARE THE FIRST TO GRAB IT, once it goes off PENDING DELETE after 90 days, can they claim ownership


I guarantee you that it happens all the time people winning auctions and not getting the domain because someone else got to it before Godaddy did,

After 42 days , the original buyer cannot go in and register it, he might have to wait until it goes up for grabs, but Godaddy has no ownership rights at that point

you go show me any site which says a registrar OWNS your domain after 42 days. I am waiting

Before a domain name enters the redemption grace period, there's the auto-renew grace period, which allows a registrar to hold the domain for 0 to 45 days and use it for its own purposes. During this period the registrar becomes the official owner of the domain but might still allow the registrant to renew it. This period also allows the registrar to test the domain for traffic and revenue by putting up PPC (pay per click) ads on the domain.
