No it does not affect ranking but i never liked Exit popups since a lot of visitors see this as you are pushing them too hard to buy something from you.

I don't think exit popups effect your rankings, but I have noticed timed popups do effect your rankings if they increase the number of bounces or decrease time on site.

Have you really noticed this on any of your websites?

I am having a website which gets around 500 unique visitors a day, which is
ranking #1 for many keywords, so I am just wondering whether I must add the exit popup or not.

Thanks

Yeah, I also expected more answers because I really wanted to know whether

to add the exit popup or not.

If anyone has had a bad experience with them, please do share.

Thanks

I don't think they do, although I have seen people claiming they do, I haven't observed this personally. The same thing as opt-in form pop-ups, many people say such pop-ups do affect, but this hasn't been my experience.

I have a site that ranks num 1.. it has an exit popup which does not seem to negatively effect its ranking.. However the exit popup is not generating any income, so I am thinking of removing it.

The exit popup may actually help to improve rankings in that it increases a visitor's time spent on your website, thereby decreasing your site's bounce rate.

Exit pop-ups are only for marketing purposes and strategies to your product's website, so it does not affect the rankings of your website.

Exit popups suck...won't buy from and will avoid sites that use them.

Same here, If I find an exit popup on a page selling something, I'll bail & won't be back.

Exit popups are at the top of my list for crappiest IM ideas, I don't care who promotes them, the tactic sucks.

Anyone that drops the price of a product is telling me their product is crap. If they believe they have a quality product, they'll stick to their original price & won't act desperate with an exit popup.

Personally, I can't stand them.

The person is trying to leave your site for a reason.

An exit popup pretty much guarantees that they will never return...

Pretty much everyone here says things along the lines of "I don't like them", "they are not effective". Nobody has said yet that popups will affect organic rankings, although one poster is in the "maybe" camp. Let me be the first to say that popups most likely affect ranking. Think about it: it's not allowed in Adwords, judged as a poor user experience, poor quality site. So of course popups will affect your organic ranking negatively.

Exit popups, by themselves, have nothing to do with rankings.
But the vast majority of sites that use them, are probably not
geared for SEO, but for other internet marketing crapola. Like
CB products. Junk sites use junk tactics.

Over time, an exit popup on a site not like the above, may
get less linkbait. But that's not a penalty from google for
an exit popup.

Okay, next is like Lucid said, off topic a tad.

Google does not like them on adwords, but allow them on
an adsense page. Adwords does allow some stuff,
(like maybe lay over ads) that do not interfere with the
navigation of the visitor. I have yet to see a full explanation
of what they do allow. In fact, they seem to talk out of
both sides of their mouths. Exit popups not allowed, etc.,
but "interstitials" that do not interfere with exiting the page.

The interstitial is not really a popup, but an intermediary page.
So what's the difference? Not much in my book. It's okay
to send users to a page, but not give them an exit pop up?
How does one send a user to a page, but not interfere with
exiting? I can only assume they mean opening up a real
webpage in another tab or window on exiting. It follows
the letter of the rule by not being a popup.

Anyone else have a better explanation of an interstitial
that does not interfere with surfing?

I hear people that have exit popups and popups in general
talk about how GREAT they are. However, I have never
heard ANYBODY else say they don't hate them.

There seems to be a disconnect somewhere. I assume that
if 5 out of 1,000 visitors or so buy, who cares what the
other 99.5% think? Exactly.

Paul
