As long as the majority of people are using Google to search for things, why wouldn't it still be profitable? That's not to say you shouldn't diversify with other forms of traffic along with trying to rank with Bing.

I'd say yes, unless someone comes out with something better. You could argue that social media is catching up with search in terms of traffic sources, however when people want to know something, they usually perform a search before doing anything else. Of course, Google has now blended search and social media into the same family, using social to help power search, and integrating a social atmosphere to search (ex. your friend +1'd this). |

Of course it will. Google isnt going anywhere fast. What type of results (paid, search, social etc) displays at the top of google in a few years time is anyones guess though. |

I worked on SEO for months but these days I am concentrating on strategies that EXCLUDE Google - their whims can seriously impact/ destroy your business overnight. In fact I am avoiding ANYTHING that takes the hard won results of my efforts out of my own hands (bit.ly is a good example). My No1 mantra is control your own destiny - I think this is sound advice. | |

Does Google still matter? The obvious answer is of course Google still matters, that is, if you're solely dependent on them for traffic. Getting to page one for profitable keywords is still going to be very lucrative for those who can do it. However, that's a very narrow view of Google. That's only one way to get traffic from them. Also bear in mind that there are plenty of marketers who don't rely on Google for traffic. Some marketers get all the traffic they need from affiliates, paid advertising (this includes mobile ads), syndicated content, free publicity, mobile apps, software, etc. I think the more germaine question should be: if Google were to disappear tomorrow or 5 years from now or if mobile devices and apps completely knocked the SEs off the face of the Internet map, would your business still survive? Why fight for getting on page one when you can simply buy traffic, rent traffic, or find other ways to get your message in front of prospects? RoD |

It matters to clients, therefore it matters to me. Several of my clients see Google and the internet as one and the same thing.

Rod puts it very well - I may still have SEO as part of my overall strategy in the future but only: a) If I feel I have the time or b) If I outsource it I have pages on P2 last time I looked and I haven't done SEO for months - it is just not a priority at the moment. |
