I'd like my homepage to rank higher than sub-page

My site ranks for "widgets" but I also want it to rank for "wide small widgets."

So I read that I was supposed to create a page "wide-small-widgets.html" and link to it from my homepage using the anchor text wide small widgets.

So that's what I did.

Now, months later, my long URL www.example.com/wide-small-widgets.html ranks for "wide small widgets" but my homepage does not.

How do I make my homepage rank for it?

If you want to rank for wide small widgets which is a sub-page, you need to backlink that page.

OK well in that case, backlink to your homepage from that particular page using the anchor text you want the home page to rank for, and go get some more backlinks to the home page from other resources with the same anchor text and you should soon outrank the sub page with the home page, but you need to ensure its well SEO optimized and all on-page SEO factors on the home page are good enough for it to rank for that keyword.

But I have a question: all the pages on my site already have a link back to my homepage using my keyword "widgets" in the sidebar. So my subpage already links back to my homepage. Are you saying to additionally use the longtail keyword anchor text (e.g. contextually in one of the articles on my subpage)?

If so, that means my subpage will be continue linking back to my homepage using widgets in the sidebar, but will also be linking back to my homepage using wide small widgets as an "editorial in-content link."

Did I understand that right?

Just put your conversion process on the subpage and make the sale/conversion there instead of the home page..

Why does it matter which page ranks for the term?

It is good thinking to create a page for your keyword because it will be easy to rank your website rapidly and you can easily get good traffic from this page.

To get rank your home page, obviously, you have to get backlinks with that particular anchor text to your home page as well as, you have to include that particular keyword in your meta keyword tag (that will help) to do so.....

Just make sure that keyword that you want to rank the homepage for is contextually in the text.

You already have internal links with the keyword text pointing, so that's cool.

Above all, backlinks are going to be the main thing. I have pages ranking for keywords, in which those keywords are actually not on the page, purely down through backlinking with the keyword as anchor text.
