First...."only" increase page rank! Position and page rank is what gets you organic traffic....no traffic, no seeing your website..so that is very important.

Second, think as backlinks as friends or people that know you for what you do..
Example: You have a website about growing carrots

A person types in the search bar looking for information on growing carrots. Google relays the question to the web, "who knows the most about growing carrots?", since you have no backlinks you say "I do" but it is only one voice..

Now the people that have many backlinks have many voices, so all of the backlinks at the number one site all scream out 'he does" so a thousand backlinks equals a thousand voices screaming in your favor, in fact you can say it is a popularity contest..

Content is important but not nearly as important as backlinks coming to your website.
