Is Facebook good or bad for seo? Since the dawn of pagerank, as far as Google sees it, one of the main factors in determining the worth of your site or page was the number and quality of inbound links. That was back in the days where people thought it was fun to put up a blog and post about this 'cool new website' they found. Naturally, the outbound links of these blogs and comments were valued quite high, and are still today. Fast forward 10 years, and introduce Facebook. Now, Google factors in the quality of a site based on "Likes".. the more "likes", "pluses", etc, the more popularity of a site, and thus higher rank. But lets think about this for a minute. From what I have observed, the average facebook user is really quite "Like" happy.. that is, their finger is really quick to "Like" something (or "plus" something, if you will). So, how does the number of likes equate the quality of a site, really.. I guarantee that I could post a link to some crap website and say "Hey, check this out!!", and it would get "Liked" by tons of people.. Heck, Im willing to bet that people would hit the "Like" button without even going to the damn page! But I digress, now that users are more on Facebook than with real social contact, and with information and ideas constantly being thrown at them, and the need to stay 'on top' of everyone's personal yet shared lives, do people actually sit down and write a blog post anymore? And when do they have time to do so if they wanted to? Do they even care? So, to them, anindication of quality of a website is now being gauged by social media sites, and that guage is skewed and unreliable, yet on the flipside, the real indicators of quality is guaged by a medium that is no longer being used. What will it come down to? I would guess, if both forms null each other out, it will eventually come full circle again, back to good ol' onpage seo. Einstein said that he didn't know how world war 3 would be fought, but he knew how world war 4 would.. with sticks and stones. So it comes down to us, folks. If you want something done right, (or even done at all), you have to do it yourself. I guess maybe that's why we're all here. Just a thought |
