Default first adwords campaign, no impressions

so i just made an adwords account 3 or 4 hours ago and made a campaign straight away, the campaign is enabled and adds are approved, the impressions are 0!

i dont really know why, iv selected about 100 keywords and the main keywords gets half a million searches, my bid is too low for a some of the words, but it is also higher than the recommended bid for some of the words now, iv been increasing it in 5p increments waiting for impressions but its not happening i dont understand why.

any advice?

100 keywords is way too many.
A dozen is way too many.
5 may be way too many.

That being said, you need to look how and where
you are bidding.

Are you bidding for the top? Your QS may not allow
to ever get there, no matter how high you bid.
Google does not allow a low QS site to be on top
in a lot of cases. Try bidding for maybe #4 or below.

Of course you may never know unless you do keep
increasing your bid. There may be tons of others
bidding, and they are all outbidding you.

First and foremost, I would whittle down the
keywords. Your site might not even be a site
that google would ever show for anywhere close
to those 100 words.

ok, thank you.

the reason i chose to go with so many keywords was because on a ebook i was reading where the guy used 800! keywords, ill try get rid of the majority.

also how important is site content because the site don't really have any content its just a straight to the point landing page designed to get as many people as possible to submit email addresses, also if it matters i wont be indexed because i only created it a few hours ago

Hi choother,

There is a delay of up to 3 hours in the AdWords campaign data, so your ads may already be running even though it doesn't show in the web interface yet. You can check to see if you ads are displaying by using the AdWords Ad Preview and Diagnosis Tool.

If you ads are not running that tool should give you some clues as to why.

Make sure that you daily budget is much higher than you plan to spend and start you bids high to get top positions in the first few hours of your campaign. After impressions and clicks begin to role in adjust your bids down to a level you are comfortable with. Leave you daily budget at 3 times what you plan to spend and adjust you bid levels to keep your spending under control.

As far as the number of keywords, I wouldn't say that 100 is too many, it all depends on what is available for your campaign, just don't use broad match keywords and use negative match keywords with your phrase match keywords to prevent all but extremely targeted keywords from triggering impressions.

Nearly all of my smallest campaigns have well over 1000 keywords. It all depends on how well you manage the campaigns. You need to micromanage your campaigns, especially when launching a new campaign, so start with the number of keywords that you feel you can comfortably manage.

Would be yourself visiting a site where there is no content?

Would you leave your email address on a site where there is no content?

Would you want to go back to a site where there is no content?

But you would remember that site where there was no content.

im not looking to build a site for people to come back to, im just building a list. there isn't no content at all, just little of it 1 article and the email capture and some graphics, i dont really see the value of spending hours building a site for people to come back to when they give me what i want on the first visit. maybe im being naive

I wouldn't use 800 different keywords with one ad. Match the keywords with the ad title will increase conversions.

As far as no impressions, I would say you missed something during setup, your ads are not approved yet, or give it a little more time for the impressions to show up on your account.

Hi choother,

I would ignore that reply, it looks like just a spam post. It was total nonsense apparently designed to get his signature link in or to get his post count up. Just report it as spam.

Your ad may not be showing for a few reasons. The account may be waiting to be verified first. Did you hoover over the keyword to see the status? If your account is ready to go and enabled, but ads aren't showing, it will say something like "your ads are showing but your search rank is too low to show on the first page."

If it simply says "your ads are not showing" with no explanation it likely means your account is under review because the keywords you chose triggered Google to review your account before running it. Or they are simply confirming your billing etc on a new account.

In the first case, 5p increments are not enough. Raise your bids to the first page bid estimates if you want impressions and clicks. With adwords you don't win by bidding low initially. And it can take a long time to get impressions if you aren't on the first page.

I have to agree with the other posters. 100 keywords is a lot for someone who is knew to this. Start with 1-5 adgroups with 1-10 keywords per adgroup. Try the most trafficked and most relevant keywords to begin.

Well, that might explain it. You may be in for an outright disable is
that's what your page is. No wonder you are getting no impressions.
Your QS must be really, really low. 100 keywords for building a list?
I can't fathom even 2. But that's just me, no offense.

Capturing emails is iffy at best using adwords. It must be done
right. There is a whole lot of things needed for google to
allow harvesting of emails.

I may get slammed, but that's what traffic exchanges were
made for. Building a list and capturing emails.

paulgl is correct.

Your page must still have content which is relevant to the keywords that you are trying to rank your Adwords campaigns for in order to get impressions. Whether or not you get impressions is based upon your Adwords Quality Score.

His Adwords Quality Score still won't give him 0 impressions. Even with a quality score of 1-2 he will get impressions with a higher bid. If the quality score is bad it usually means the keywords lack relevance to the page.

It sounds like either his campaign is not approved or he needs to raise his bids.

That, my friend, is where you are in serious error. Google does not want
junk shown. They will most likely not show a page with a QS of 1-2,
no matter how high they bid. That would be time to change keywords
and start over. The higher QS users would be getting a lower rate,
and hog the top spots.

Why would google torture their searchers with crapola?

If I were you I'd read up on Quality Score. From there you will have a solid understanding of how to get the best positions which ultimately means impressions and clicks. Also, if you are bidding on keywords with massive traffic you might want to set budget caps and use exact match or phrase match to avoid blowing a lot of money in minutes!

They are not good keywords for him if they have that quality score which I tried to imply. However they will still receive impressions after 4 hours with a keyword with half a million searches if you bid high enough. With a high volume keyword even on the second page losing out to other advertisers in the bid, you will have impressions by then however few. I simply believe it sounds like there is something else going on with the account, such as an account review, if they are not showing at all.
