Leveraging the backlinks

Hello fellow Warriors,

we're promoting several websites (same niche but targeting different countries). All websites have different TLDs and are in different languages (except for the .us, co.uk and .com.au sites which share the same language). All websites share the same IP and use the same CMS. The content is different and the sites are not interlinked.
We are trying to use some leverage by submitting press releases/articles with backlinks pointing to different sites (e.g. .us, .co.uk, .com.au) from the same article or PR.
What are the possible implications of this strategy? Can our sites be penalized or backlinks devalued? Our sites are related (share the same platform and IP address) but have different TLDs and cater to different audiences.
