Default Newbie looking to begin SEO

Hey guys I have just recently got into making money online. I have been writing articles for the past few months, and it makes good money, but I figure if I write for myself I will make more money in the end.

OK, first of all, I'm lazy. I will tell you that now, just to get it out of the way. I don't mind doing worthwhile stuff, but I would much rather pay someone $10 or $20 to do an hour or two of grueling work.

Because I am lazy, I would like to outsource the "grunt" work, such as directory submissions, social bookmarking submissions, etc. However, I am a bit confused as to how it works.

When I see a thread at WF (the other WF), or DP, I see people offering submission to 500-1000+ directories. Now, does that mean article directories, or just sites that list a bunch of sites in a particular niche?
And what about article directory submissions... Doesn't every article you submit to directories (such as Ezine) have to be unique? I see people saying that if you send them an article, they will submit it to 100's of directories.. But wouldn't it just get denied because of duplicate content? Or do most article directories accept duplicates?

Also, what would be a good way of building up my SEO rankings by myself? I could dedicate an hour or two per day probably... Should I just write articles? And if I do write articles, should I submit them to EzineArticles, or post them directly on my site?

Don't ask me what the site is because it isn't up and running yet. I am just starting to set it up, and I will probably hire a decent designer to get it going. It will be in the video game niche, if that matters.

If you could answer my questions directly and/or link me to a valuable resource, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks, and sorry for the stupid questions

That's good... I would be happy to be getting 50-100 UV's/day from Google.
