Can Someone Help Me Clearify Difference In Post, Pages & Articles For SEO. Which is better?

I have kind of a newbie question. Ive been reading a lot of guides on SEO and most of them refer to posting articles on your website about your different keywords every couple of days. So heres my question i have.

When someone mentions posting articles, Do they simply have like a 1-3 page site, and every couple days their just posting a new Post with the keyword as title and then their paragraphs have all the keywords? So that basically all the posts are all on one page and you have one really long page since each post is suppose to be more then 500 words for SEO Purposes.

Or, when they say articles, are they creating different pages on their site. So say they are targeting 10 different keywords, are they creating those 10 different keywords as pages, then just on the pages they are putting their 500+word article with their keywords and information.

I hope i explained that right and someone can help me out.

If anyone has any site examples that would be great. Im looking at adsense sites, rental sites and amazon sites. Basically just trying to learn seo and website building first.
