Default Citations VERSUS Backlinks: What Has more Weight

What has more weight, that is is most important, when it comes to ranking in Google Places results- Citations (directories) or Backlinks?

Both are important, but what is most important to spend the most amount of resources on?

Please provide your experiences and any tests you've done.

Good question. From my experience it seems citations may just edge it. I've not done a lot of local place ranking (I usually focus on traditional SEO), but I have managed to rank a few pages very well, with hardly any backinks. I focused on getting citations and this seemed to do the trick for me.

Thanks for that. Great information. Do you have a good source you use for citations?

This can be an excellent topic because sometimes, the main difference between websites which are on the front page of Google in competitive niches, even one single place going up or down, could be directly dependent on citations which many times can act even better than direct links. If you take a look at some links pointing at Wikipedia pages, you will find them coming from educational spots, tutorial sites and other blogs which have listed some parts of the original contents.

Citations seem to be like editorial links, given to the sites or actually rewarding them in a great way and in most cases they will get picked by Google and other big names in search engines world very fast. Usually, citations can be gained when you add incredibly strong content pages to your site or blog, the ones that have been written in a unique way and winning some editorial links. Many pages of Wikipedia have become famous and reaching high spots because of such links.

For Google Places, I would say citations. For all other types of rankings, backlinks by far are the best.

Is this just useful for "brick and mortar" businesses? Or are there other uses?

Oh no, sorry, I have always done this myself. At one stage I did look into outsourcing to Odesk, but I am still doing this myself at the moment.

To be honest, most of my SEO work is around traditional sites, not local, but I have managed to do a little local ranking stuff for friends and family with businesses.
