Default SEO problem? Site not in root

Hi All,

I have a site which comprises of a Wordpress install, and a SMF forum.

Long story, the site originally started off with the forum being installed in the root (now sat in /forum), before I decided to make the main site the Wordpress install (sat in /news).

So when you type in the domain name now, you get 301 redirected to /news instead of it just showing the root. I had to go this way because of needing to maintain old URL's correctly.

I'm now wondering if the site is being hindered because of the 301 redirect to /news, instead of just having it as standard.

The site is at "onedirection.net". (Wouldn't let me post URL's)

Any feedback?

Cheers,

Chris.

You would probably have to have someone take a look under the hood for you. I would start with asking your hosting provider.

I am my hosting provider It's on my own dedicated server.

My question is just whether the current setup is potentially hurting the site's SEO?

Cheers, Chris.

There is a bit of degradation with each 301.

So the short answer is Yes - you are losing some value.

But it might be so small, that its not worth worrying about.

I think it would generally be considered bad form to link to your main page like that.

But, then again, the way matt cutts does it is not particularly useful either.
