(in wordpress) If i have my permalinks set up to exclude the category from the URL. Could I then noindex and/or nofollow both my tags AND my categories? or would that mean my posts may not get indexed either? Currently I find google indexes my post both as the individual post and also separately under it's category (I already have tags no index). I'm worry about the whole duplicate content issue. Bit confused about the whole thing. |

When you "drop" the category from your permalinks, it doesn't affect the fact that there are categories, it just changes the URL. If you do not want your categories indexed for duplicate content reasons, or (for example) because you are using WordPress as a CMS, you can "nofollow" them (or even disable them completely, in the last case). I, however, never nofollow my tags, except in the CMS-case. |

If you use all in one seo then it has a feature which no follows categories and tags.

Thanks everyone. I'm just worried that if I noindex/nofollow the categories, then all the posts within those categories would therefore not be indexed either.

Noindex is placed in the head section of a page. That means the page that has noindex in the header is not going to be indexed. As long as your articles can be reached through other paths there should be no problem.

If your sites dropped because of the latest penguin update and panda tweek, you would maybe want to review the indexing of your categories and tags. To Index or Noindex? That is the question! My personal 169 year experience, it all depends on your theme, if you click on your tag and you have exactly the same text as your post and not a small preview, then you should Noindex or use the <link rel="canonical" /> meta tags. |
