Default How do you judge if a keyword is rankable and worth the effort?

Dear Warriors,

As a marketer but an IM newbie, I'm interested to get a feel for the lay of the land when it comes to how Warriors judge how rankable a keyword is for a top10 position, and if its worth the effort, i.e. how profitable it might be.

For example, Are you bullish about high volume, competitive tougher to rank keywords and grind it out over the long term, or do you go for the quick win in an easy micro niche and focus on selecting low volume but highly profitable keywords ?

If you had to translate your attitude towards keyword research into a set of criteria, I would be very grateful to get a better understanding of where You would set your marker and how you prioritise.

E.g.

1. Search volume (Global, Local)
2. Google results (Broad, exact)
3. Allintitle results
4. Average PR
5. No of authority sites
6. Buy keyword rating (however you rate that)
7. EMD available
8. emd sites present in top 10

Or any other factors

Appreciate the insight guys. I'm not looking for a sure fire method, but more interested how varied the attitudes are depending on your marketing style.

If you can get that right, you will never have a problem with keyword research again.

MS doesn't tell the whole story.

Two factors are important:
Know what you can achieve
Guesstimate wether the profits make up for the time invested

If you want to rank fast and with little effort the two most important factors to look for are PR and backlinks. If those 2 are red then you might as well move on.

But still, some seemingly uncrackable niches are very doable if you have the patience.
I've done it once and I know I can do it twice

Market Samurai is ridiculously overrated. It does have a free trial though, so you can check it out and see whether it's for you. The google adwords keyword tool and some 'google search' digging is far more advanced than any keyword software.

As for knowing whether or not a keyword is worth it...

THat takes experience for the most part. You want to make sure that you go after a keyword with commercial intent. So chances are, there will be some competition. But not so much that it's too difficult and time consuming to create traffic.

This takes practice and testing. Eventually you will develop a sixth sense towards finding the golden nugget keywords that can drive good traffic to your site.

Best of luck!

nothing to see here....

PR and backlinks?
Disagree

Its Backlinks and how MANY backlinks the sites have with YOUR KW AS THE ANCHOR TEXT, and whats THE PR OF THOSE BACKLINKS

I can be going up against a site with 100k backlinks to the page
but
How many of those backlinks are TARGETING MY KW

google doesnt just rank pages based on ok hmm this page has 100,000 backlinks so it goes to number one.

Backlinks to what kw? Whats the anchor text of those backlinks? what kw are those backlinks targeting? Whats the quality and PR of those backlinks targeting MY KW?

Also
Onpage SEO factors are important

PR Of the PAGE being pulled up or the domain ranking top on google? Totally irrelevant IMO
