Default So let me get this straight with Market Research and SEO....

Hey Fellas!

I've been reading and watching a whole lot of material, some of it more relevant than other stuff, but I want to be sure with this..

So how I go about finding my niche is to go on the Google Adwords tool and look for something that has a high search rate? And also, am I right in saying that the "competition" bar in the search tool is more or less virtually useless regarding market research?

From my understanding it is the number of backlinks that are backing a page that determine it's strength in the SERP'S? So that's what I have to look at in order to study my competition? Can anyone recommend a good FireFox addon to show those backlinks right away on the SERP'S? I have SeoQuake but I have to click on every single one of the pages in order to see number of backlinks etc.

Please tell me if I've got this right, and also if I've missed anything. Thanks guys!

You've over-simplified it.

The number of links is one thing, but the type and relevance of them is WAY more important than the number.

10 good links is worth 10000 bad ones.

Find niches that people are desperate to get solution.
I do this by going to embarrassingproblems(dot)com, and list down a
few potential niche.

Then do a search on Google, this is my formula:

-at least 1,000 search on google keyword tool
-No more than 50,000 page in google search in quotes ex: > "Keyword in quote"
-No more than 10,000 page in google search allintitle ex: > allintitle:"keyword in quoute"

Meet all the requirement above then it is a niche to go for.

Next you will want to check whether people are wiling to spend money on that niche or not. Google search >Microsoft commercial intent< and download the software.

You are able to see whether how many percent that someone is looking for your keyword is going to buy a product.

As for backlinks, you can check how many backlinks your competitor have and which website is their backlinks from using SEOSPYGLASS. it is free. You can know what website backlinks they have and its website PR and its link juice.

Hope it helps.

Are you doing this for Adsense?

google adwords tool doesnt show competition. the "competition" they show is very misleading, and not accurate at all. It is based on number of sites running ADS on those kws, not relevant at all IMO. Remember the Adwords kw tool is primarily for ADWORDS and ADVERTISERs paying PPC (pay per click ads on Google), not for webmasters looking up good kws

You need to learn how to use and buy Market Samurai, IMO
go to youtube and enter "market Samurai SEO" And tons of vids will pop up teaching you how to analyze competition with Market Samurai

I am interested in trying out Adsense, yes but I'm also going to launch my own Info Product sooner or later. I'm an IM newbie at the moment so I'm just going to try a little bit of everything and see how things go.

Market Samurai is broken from what I've heard at the moment.. In the mean time I want to make sure that I've gotten all the basic concepts correct first. I want to learn how analyzing the competition is done manually so I understand how everything fits together.

Yes more or less. Not only just the number of backlinks, but also the quality of backlinks are important.

Make sure you are looking at the exact match search volume.

The Adwords competition is far from useless. In particular, if you are going to be putting adsense on your site, you want a good CPC and medium/high Adwords competition.

A medium/high competition is a reasonable indicator of commercial intent, otherwise advertisers wouldn't bother use the keywords in their Adwords campaign.

As others have pointed out, it's not just pure numbers of backlinks, it's the quality and diversity of them that counts.

Traffic Travis is a very useful free tool for examining competition.
