I have a basic seo question. To increase serps for a certain keyword am I suppose to get backlinks to the page containing that certain keyword or am I suppose to just get backlinks directly to the main domain?

to get high quality links you should try to get links from the same sites... means themed links.

get backlink to respective page which you are targeting on search engine. if you are targeting keyword on home page then put home page url otherwise put url of page with respective anchor text you are targeting
