Knowning the difference between losing rankings a google dance?

Hey

I know what a google dance and lost of rankings are but how do you tell which your site is affected by?

I know you can tell with time, because a google dance will come back if you continue with your linking plan.

but is there anything that you can do to tell if you need to change your linking plan,beside from time.

Any help would be great.

Uhm..

google dance - You will be gone from serps for a while, but come back stronger
loosing rankings - You will loose your SERP slowly from time to time

I wanted to know, if there was anyway to find out quicker without just waiting it out.
