Default SEO for a newbie?

Hi,

I realize there are stickies above, but I'm going to completely honest I can't be bothered to read 15 million pages on SEO. I know how to find good keywords and I know the basics, but I don't know how to go about it all - which methods of backlinking should I avoid and which ones should I focus on? Which 3 methods are thought to be the best by most people? How should I go about the 3 said methods without having to buy software/packages etc?

Help would be appreciated. I'd like to get going rather than read for hours, sorry!

If you can't be bothered to read, why should we be bothered to write?

Wow, tough crowd.

I can understand trying to avoid information overload, it's bound to happen after reading through all of those forum posts! The SEOmoz document is definitely a great place to start. Don't let the Chapter 9 scare you away from link building though. Regardless of what you read, there is a learning process, so I suggest you start taking action while you read along. Your level of retention will increase dramatically if you put the concepts into practice as you learn them.

to be brief, quality will beat quantity....link diversity, consistency, in my opinion Profile links are garbage. and use the search button if you cant take the time to read and learn then you should stick to walmart SEO and IM are lifestyle changes just like working out, you dont bench press 400lbs without lifting weights.

Thanks to the two who gave a little info and that link I had a look at too.

I just read a lot and then read something else that completely contradicts what I previously read. It seems no one actually knows what they're talking about, so I kinda wanted to know what the general consensus was on link building! i.e. what is generally thought to be the best method etc. Even blog commenting is favoured by many, but then many say that it's pretty useless.

It all comes down to setting up your website for Google (on page seo), and then building high quality backlinks to your website (off page seo).
That's it in a nutshell. Get started

It's the "building high quality backlinks" that I'm stuck on!

For the past 6 months, blog networks are working the best for me. I would suggest checking out my service, we build links every day of the month from two quality blog networks. And while some people can disagree whether blog comments or forum profiles are working, I doubt anyone could tell you that blog networks are not working at the moment. The key is to be consistent.

I have found a lot of success with forum postings and article submission sites. I can tell you that those two methods definitely do work.

I understand that you do not wish to go through 10001 pages of spam/repeated content.

I would suggest reading my post on the subject, which might seem a big "beginnerish" at first but many of the so called "advanced" players are not following.

so check out How to do SEO by yours truly

Hope this helped.

You have to read a lot if you wanna learn SEO but start slowly search for few reputed peoples such as Danny sullivan, Matt Cutts of google and then go deeper.

You don't need to read 15 million of SEO pages. You can read but you don't like reading. How would you be able to learn about that? Honestly, I am too have little knowledge on SEO but I'm learning. You can't be an SEO if you're lazy enough to read. Theory comes first followed by application.

You need backlinks, quality links. I suggest you outsource your seo work if you don't want to do all the work or learn seo.

Just use the search engine, youtube and you can also see in this forum, which pages are higher ranked. Anyway I'm still starting I pass many, many hours studying and some days up to 10 hours. When I begin a new site I study each step once again.

You need to study to master things and be better then the webmaster who you will compete in your niche else you will just fail.

Even if you outsource your work you should atleast know the basics else you wont know if the other person is doing the right job or not.

Buyseech I read your blog and it's pretty cool man. Nice one
