Build few links from High PR Directories (they charge a listing fee, but its worth and easy to get)

Your situation might have allot to do with the top ranking sites on the first page. If there are a bunch of high pr authority sites in front of you then you will have a hard time. The best type of link that you could possibly build is contextual anchor text backlinks on actual high pr pages related to you niche. You could also try to put google+ and facebook like buttons on your site. Social relevance is playing quite a big roll in SEO these days.

You need to target the keyword with the appropriate content and be sure that you have selected the right keywords for your site. And you need to promote your content on the social media also so that from it you can get more visitors and users for your site. And you need to use the blog , articles and video methods to get top position for your keyword.

Yea that's what I would focus on as well. It's all about quality when it comes to backlinks.
