Somebody stealing my content and outranking me with it?

Hello warriors,

Hopefully somebody can help me with the following. I've been starting with my first website a few months ago, and have been steadily improving. Today when checking the ranking in google for a keyword, I found out that somebody had copied a whole blogpost of mine. Not that big a deal if I still outrank him in google. Only problem is, he scored higher in google than me with that blog post (!).

Does anyone have a possible explanation for it, something that I can do about it? Cheers!

    Hello Martijn,

Unfortunately this is not uncommon. Google doesn't always know where the original content is made so can often wrongly associate the ownership with someone who has 'copied' it. If the site on which your post was duplicated has a higher PR, a few more backlinks etc than your own website, they can essentially be 'credited' with your work and appear higher in the SERP's.
You should send them a 'take down' notice which you can instigate from here DMCA Takedown Services - Get Stolen Content Removed

If his website is more popular (gets more views) and he puts more links to it that might explain it. Put simple links in your signature on forums and maybe you can beat him..

that being said this is unfair. if your blogs show what time it was posted leave a simple comment on all the pages he took including a link to the original and tell them to look at the times.

on your blog you can denounce him which may help you some..

that being said if he is copying all your posts you can try to trick him by making a post you copied from somewhere else and after he copies it delete it from your blog and tada.. hurting him (never tried this)..

good luck man! we warriors will try to help you!

Send DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) report to google (link) or to their hosting company (check for their hosting company via whois info > link)

The reason why he is higher in Google is, the big G consider his website more valuable than yours. More exposer on Social networks, quality backlinks...

What can you do about it? I'm not really sure. I haven't had this kind of problem.

If this site owner has taken your content without crediting it to you then send him a DMCA NOTICE.
He may be curating if so he should have credited the content to you.

  • Interesting,

I have seen this over and over, and what you need to do is analyze his site to see what he did differently than what you did. It may be a small difference, but you need to figure it out or you will lose traffic, which means you will never get listed above a site with more traffic.

    Success to all,

while there are no hard guides for this, my experience is that newer sites have a much harder time with this stuff.

As your site gets more backlinks and you get a reputation (with google) for adding content often, your content will get indexed first, and you will be given a better ranking than others who post the content after you.

This usually occurs when someone else gets your content indexed before you in google.

Your best bet is to file a DMCA with their web host if they are in the US.

Same thing is happening to me, my site is in google news and so many scrapers have stolen my content and have ranked higher than me.

I have no clue why this is happening, I never received a penalty warning at all. Google screwed up search, they only put new articles on first page, when you search for a specific term or phrase, its harder for people who need to find important stories dated a few years back. or specific stories to help people with research.

Get a Google plus membership, become a verified author, and put authorship tags on your website from here on in.

Submit your feed as a sitemap on google webmaster tools.

Submit new posts to all social media you can manage to submit it to, immediately on posting.

Put back links in your posts so if people steal your content automatically they might end up back linking to you next time.

Other than the take down notice, which is a good idea, you could also rewrite your content and make it new again.

Contact DMCA, and wait for DMCA reply till you complain gets processed. If you can prove the content is yours, they'll likely take it down from the other blog

If your site is slow in indexing then you lost your content, and the other website owner who had posted your content would get the benefit if his or her site is fast in indexing.
