Default Keyword Ranking Question On Google

Hi, I have a website about 4 months old and I have been building backlinks steadily. It is puzzling to me because the site is not ranking anywhere for the search term that I am targeting, but it is doing fairly well for one that I am not.

This is not my keyword, but an example of what is happening. The backlink anchor text uses a three word keyword: for example "hp laptop computer", however my site does not show up in the results for that term, but it is on page 4 for the keyword "hp" for example.

I would have thought that the site would rank better for the three word keyword than a one word keyword. Does anyone have experience with this?

This should be a sign to you that backlinks are only part of the puzzle.

I'd lay odds that the content on the page is not totally relevant for the keyword phrase you are looking to rank for.

Look at some basic on page SEO (but dont overdo it) and check the content. Is it really about a "hp laptop computer" with lots of content about it and also using related keywords that would make sense to a human visitor.

I suspect when you are ranking on page 4 for "hp" it is only for your own search results or region and not global.

If you are doing that well for such a search term that would again be time to review the content in my opinion.

ummm.... It sounds A LOT like not enough anchor text variations. If you only ever use your ONE keyword while building backlinks, google will penalize just that one keyword. I have had this happen to me many times.

I fixed the problem by blasting backlinks with different anchor texts, so that it's more natural to Google. Add in a bunch of "click here" or "read more here" or "more info here" type anchor texts and your main keyword should be in better shape.

nothing to see here....

Like co2 has said, you should not stick with building links using a keyword as anchor text. For example, if you are using keyword like "computer", you could add some prefixes or suffixes to your keyword to make it more natural like "best computers", or "computers for sale". Something like that.
