Global monthly does not help really much. Try exact match. There is a high chance that keyword does not really pay.

It looks like you found a great keyword to work with, if i read what you are saying correctly! 12,000+ global monthly searches is a lot of traffic if you can rank that keyword with not much competition. If the information you gave is in the order of the competitors ranking, meaning the first ranking site is a PR1 with only 45 links, and the second result is a PR 2 with only 28 links you can most likely easily outrank them. what you should do is download a free software called seo spyglass, or use whatever you are already using, and look at where they are getting their links. If the links the 45 links the first ranking site has are all irrelevant links, you will outrank the site easily. On the other hand, if you scan their links and see that all their links are relevant to the keyword with the keyword in their anchor text, then it may be a bit harder, but still very doable! Hope that helps! If you have any more questions regarding this let me know! -Mike | |

My method is check phrase match "". I made this exact mistake. Created a site for a 18k broad site, turns out phrase was in the hundreds.

Doesn't sound like the keyword is that great, sorry. You should be using [exact] match with google keyword tool. Look for at least 1000+ exact match searches per month. If you want low competition: On the Google 1st page, look for PR0 or noPR on at least 2 of the top 10 ranking sites. Check for a low number of Page Links. Also check if the top 10 are targeting your keyword in the Title. Hope that helps. - Mosa |

I agree exact match is the way to go. If your keyword has a good number for exact you most likely have a winner. Take a look at the phrase match number if it is a lot higher than the exact match- then you have a good base to fan out your keywords. [main keyword phrase] modifier[main keyword phrase] [main keyword phrase]modifier The modifiers will be found by people searching phrase match and the exact will be found by exact searchers- use buyer words as modifiers you will have alot covered- good luck |

Two basic things. Are you selecting exact match type? Where is the majority of traffic coming from (geographically)? |

Better listen to these guys saying to use [exact] match on those keyword tools, otherwise chances are very high that you'll be having a bad day when you get to #1 in the SERPs & no traffic exist.

From what you said I want to say you didn't click the exact match. Not a whole lot of EMDs with that kind of volume and competition so I am leaning towards probably not a good keyword. |

Agree with everyone else, make sure your using exact. The other thing is the keyword intention. If you are running an affiliate site or something you may want to make sure your targeting the correct keyword, so you are delivered qualified traffic that want to engage with your site. Getting the right keywords are essential. |

I'll join the mantra about using exact match to check the search volume. If you want to know why you should use exact match, read my blog post about the biggest keyword research mistakes. |

Well, you learned a valuable lesson that a lot of us go through and that many other newbies can find useful, as well. The bottom line is this (and you know this now): The beginning part of making money online is to do really good market and keyword research so that you don't spend a ton of time and a lot of work (possibly a lot of money) going after a market that is too competitive or using keywords that don't get much search volume. Once you know how to put up websites and get targeted traffic, the main part is this market and keyword research so that you actually are selling something people want to buy and that there is a big enough market but not too much competition. Then your time will be well spent and you can actually make some money...... hopefully. :-) |

As you know now, use the exact match. When it comes down to number of searches per month it depends. If your keyword is just a word then look for over 1000 searches per month, but if you want to rank for key phrase that has action verb in it like "buy", "get" etc. then you might be even good with 200 searches per month

Alot of good replies here. But I too would like to know what kind of research would be wise. I have heard a lot of good things about market samurai. And I think long tail pro ? What is the difference and why would these work versus just using a free google tool?
