I realize niche markets are the craze now, mostly because a good one will earn money quickly if optimized. I am wanting to go the opposite direction. I want to develop a website (just one) for a competitive keyword (65 million results for the keyword on google) 100,000 daily searches on google and the top 10 results have a PR of 5-7, several backlinks and gov, edu links. None of the websites have the condensed content for top keywords and few have the keyword in the title (they are wikipedia-like sites). My question is, if I build the website, add relevant and fresh content over time and do my SEO over the course of 5-10 years, could I ever reach the first page of google and make the big bucks? Has anyone here had success with a highly competitive keyword when done slowly and consistently? |

What you want to do is access the other pages on the first page of google for your keyword. How well optimized are they for your keyword? Do they have it in their domain, title, description. What kind of backlinks do they have to their site? Are they all PR0, or high PR3, 4, 5? These factors will give you an idea of what it will take to outrank them and if it's possible. My advice would be, sure go for it, but in the meantime, build a few smaller sites as well which you will rank quicker, just to keep you motivated. You can always have your big website as a side project if you like. All the best, and hats off for your ambition. | |

| A friend of mine done this and did reach first page in Google for a very competitive keyword. What he did to achieve this was; first, he analysed the top 10 sites, his competition; he did not have to compete against 60 million but just the first ten. When he researched these top ten, he found all the keywords they had and analysed the content they had. He then had many different people contributing with content under different aliases and from different ip’s. Building backlinks from was his major headache, he basically tried to get backlinks from all the other top ten sites sources. Of course, he did not get all these but did manage to get quite a few. With all these links, he added more fresh backlinks from his own sources and outsourcing. |
