Default Linking to Authority Sites

I have a site I'm very happy with but not completely. It makes me about $10 a day in the #4 position in Google. It's been there for awhile so instead of flooding it with tons of unrelated backlinks, I'm testing something I've been wondering about. I added a link to an authority site (the Center for Disease Control dot gov). That authority site deals with my topic but doesn't directly compete with my range of keywords.

I just added the link today so I'm gonna let it sit for a couple weeks and see what happens.

Anybody have any experience with this tactic? If so, did it move you up in the rankings?

I've often wondered about this. Every once in awhile I'll stumble upon a site that's an obvious "niche"-type site and I'll see them linking to related authorities like Chevrolet.com or something similar.

It makes sense that it would help you. I mean, Google would see your keywords, content, alt-tags, etc and then they see a link to an authority site that they know for a fact is about your niche.

I don't know, if I may try this out on a couple of my rent-a-sites that I'm trying to rank now.

Some people think that this works. In fact, I saw a WSO recently where someone was selling a plugin that would automatically pull down links to authority sites and add them at the end of your blog post wikipeida-style for this very purpose.

I didn't buy because my blog already has another plugin that adds stuff at the bottom of the post, but I almost did. You can watch the video to see the angle on this. [-DIMESALE-] DOMINATE Google...Backlinks?Outlinks?WHAT?

Yes it's good practice but don't expect much to happen.

And also don't just link to cdc.gov. You want to link to an internal page that is closely related to your topic. Avoid blogrolls, and link within your content.

Thanks for the insight. I am linking to an internal page related to my topic, but I didn't want to give away the specific topic. I was hoping a government site like this might carry a lot more weight than some other sites called "authority" sites. I'm above the fold on the first page for my keyword, I just want to get closer to #1 and a little more stable.
