Default Google serps confusion,...

Is there any way a keyword returning 736,000,000 results could be low competition?

Below from the AdWords tool.

The first number is monthly global searches second number is monthly local searches.

Low 68,000,000 16,600,000 $0.80

Yes, because that is a broad search. Try checking phrase or exact match to get a much more accurate number.

Note: Number of results is often not determinate of competition. Just use it as a general guide.

Your true competition is based on the strength of the websites using/promoting this keyword and their authority as far as Google is concerned.

As Tim said above that number means absolute diddly, all you need to worry about is the strength of the competition on the front page, if you see all PR0, PR1 and PR2 sites you should have little trouble, PR3'3 will take longer to get past.PR 4,5,6, I would choose another keyword until your site can compete.
Don't worry about Amazon, you can nearly always get past them, and don't worry about wikipedia either, as they are not the competition.

Actually, that low, medium, high in the Adwords tool has ZERO to do with serp competition. That is representative of the competition for that keyword within the Adwords program.

Medium is NOT the difficultly for ranking in the SERPS for that particular keyword, it is an indication of the number of advertisers bidding on that keyword for their Adwords Campaigns.

Your brain.

Most tools rely on that Adwords tool. What u can do us use something like market samurai to get keyword ideas and then do your own searches and testing on those keywords.

Overture? Wow you have been away a while.

OK here's your organic research tool - any site that stores information, there are thousands of them and millions of keywords to be found all for free

A good paid option is Wordtracker, monthly subscription though.
