KW variations

Hey everyone, how important is it to have KW variations for your anchor text when submitting an article/blog comment/whatever program(BMR,AMR,UAW,etc) for backlinks?

Does it really help boost your site that much?

I'm also guessing that another reason why it's good to have variations is because you're also ranking your page with other keywords. But what I'm more concern on is if does help your site boost up with the main keyword.
