Manual Link Building - The Heart and Soul of REAL rankings

Link Building is still one of the most important factors in an effective SEO campaign.

For search engines that crawl the web, "links are the streets between pages". Using in depth link analysis and complex algorithms, the engines can discover how pages are related to other pages and in what ways.

The SE themselves have refined the use of link data to a fine art, and incredibly sophisticated algorithms create nuanced evaluations of site and pages based on this information.

Before embarking on a link building effort, it's critical to understand the elements of a link used by the search engines as well as how those elements factor into the weighting of links in the algorithms.

We don't know all the attributes measured by the engines, but through analysis of patent applications, papers submitted to information retrieval conferences, and hands-on experience & testing, we can draw some intelligent assumptions. Below is a list of notable factors worthy of consideration. All of these issues, and many more, are considered by professional SEOs when measuring link value and a site's link profile.

Manual link building is often a preferred method of achieving links. You can pay a service to get you a ton of cheap links, but likely they are not going to create a stellar backlink profile for your site. The links you need, rather, should have the following things in common:

· link buildingHave similar, but not exactly the same, anchor text. Vary your anchor text on the links you achieve.
· Make sure the domain on which the link resides is of like content to your own site. Try to stay in the same niche 'neighborhood'.
· Check the backlinks of the domain or page on which you are trying to get links. This is a huge factor in determining the overall value of the link you hope to attain.
· The page on which your link resides has a high page rank. This doesn't mean that every single link you place out there should be a PR 5 or above.
· Your link should be correct. This might be an obvious statement, but make sure the link isn't broken, or else your work will be for nothing.

I made this post in order to share on of my own files I use to train people how to look for links:

I was cleaning out some files on my pc, I found this, I just wanted to remind people about this because I see that a lot of us forgot about this with all the hype around web 2.0. I am not saying that web 20 its not good but the key to great rankings is to diversify your links.

I still have many directory links that count to my older websites that go back for years. What a value to have paid once for inclusion and still be there.

Definitely second that! So many people are wrapped up in the buzz of new methods that they forget what got their websites ranked to begin with. Sure, you have to stay up with the times but anyone who depends on a single method is going to put themselves at risk.

well directories wont make a big difference, if its not dmoz or yahoo. There are about 20-30 of good directories that I know of, with prices that range from $40-$300 per year.

or directories specific to your niche (normally free)

about links pages - sorry to disappoint, you they have exactly 0 (zero) value, you can use that information in 2 ways:

      1. You have a webmaster who is interested in a link exchange, or at least knows about that possibility

      2. From their link pages you will find a bunch of people in your niche you can contact or at least start a conversation.

But keep in mind this is something that will consume a lot of time - either hire someone or be prepared to spend days...

A good link searcher would bring me 1 maybe 2 good links per day and I would be happy.

Manual link building with quality sites related to your niche is always going to beat out automatic link building, in the long run. Search engines will continue to hone their algorithms to seek and destroy the effects of inflating your SERP rank through artificial means.

If you are in the business of building up traffic and flipping the site to someone else, the long range health of the site may not be your concern. If you are interested in building a sustainable website, build your links the old fashioned way.

Yes you are right, but if you are trying to build a REAL business online, you wont be able to sell to many before people catch on.

The "get rich quick schemes" will never work, or work but eventually you will find yourself back to where you started, back to the drawing board.

Yeah I think these linkpages / directories can be a great help to find other relevant (small) webmasters who are in for a link exchange.

Personally I thought local relevant webdirectories were pretty valuable, but guess not.

        Thanks for the tips!
