Rest assured, Google are on a mission to clamp down on all those engaging in anything other than good content and ethical ways of promotion. And just to really put the cat amongst the pigeons, here comes the Google Over Optimisation Penalty (OOP)… This one is really going to be felt! So what do we know about the OOP? Well, here is a quote from Matt Cutts: We don’t normally pre-announce changes but there is something we are working in the last few months and hope to release it in the next months or few weeks. We are trying to level the playing field a bit. All those people doing, for lack of a better word, over optimization or overly SEO – versus those making great content and great site. We are trying to make GoogleBot smarter, make our relevance better, and we are also looking for those who abuse it, like too many keywords on a page, or exchange way too many links or go well beyond what you normally expect. We have several engineers on my team working on this right now. Read into this what you will, but for those taking notice, this means that if you have tried too hard to influence Google, expect this to be a wake up call and one that you need to fix! Help! What can we do? Well, panicking wont help anyone so the best thing to do is look at your site and decide what has been put in place to try and make Google take too much notice. This includes:
Real SEO Comes from Writing Great Content If you think about it, this makes perfect sense. Write or host unique content that people will find interesting and you will find Google will see this. After all, who wants to visit a site that actually has nothing to offer? Think about your own browsing habits… if you landed on a site that was nothing but links to useless pages or you couldn’t find your way around, would you stay? Put yourself a plan together that covers at least the following areas:

What's the relation between the Poll title & the OP comment? Poll title = What do you think of googles new money making tactic Then OP is about on-page SEO. |

This guy has NO IDEA what he's talking about. A website does NOT fit a certain model or mold. there are billions of sites, and these people are trying to control and dictate what they think the internet should be...the FCC needs to investigate, this has gone too far.

As long as I can rank a page written in Latin for an English keyword within 1 week on #2. Well what else should I say then...

Another scare tactic. Google still has no way of determining what "quality" content is. Thin sites probably won't survive but you had to see that coming anyway. |

So not sure how much you can make out of this but..I changed my meta description to be less keyword heavy. SERPS jumped 5 pages in less than 24 hours from 8 to 3. My website completely vanished prior ( I was on the first page for a little before it vanished). Then again, I am very active in social media so it's possible someone picked up one of my blog entries. Had a huge spike in traffic

I'm all for playing by the rules, and have learned painful lessons in the past, but this seems borderline extreme. For example, in the past I had no hesitation to comment on relevant blogs with a link to my website. But now I'm afraid to, I'll think that Google will release an "Anti Blog Comment Algorithm" or something that will incur a penalty. Now my SEO is based on fear rather than potential, and it's a scary place to be.
