Default Changing Domain = Affect Traffic?

I'm a newbie here and a question has been bottling my mind a lot lately.
This maybe a VERY DUMB question but...

I currently have NO money, i'm 18, just starting IM and SEO.
I am planning to use a domain such as .in for now, or something else, like a free one on a webhost.

So my question is, if I ended up getting tons of traffic on that domain and I changed it to a .com when I made money, would I lose my rank on Google and all my traffic?

A .com only costs $7.49 or something like that at Godaddy for a YEAR! You can find the coupon codes at fatwallet. Just make the small investment and go for it.

Yeah but, its like..
I'm afraid of wasting my money.

What if the niche I pick fails? The domain I used for that niche will be a waste and so will the money I used for it.

Plus I might be making more than 1 website, you know, targeting different niches to earn more money.
Which brings me back to the fear of failure/wasting money part.

What if... what if... what if?

If you are that afraid, try using a free blogger blog or hubpages. Those are free. If you see success, then start over with a .com.

You need to get the fear of failure in check ASAP. It will destroy you before you have a chance to succeed. What if your first niche fails. Are you going to get scared and give up? What if your first 5 niches fail. Are you going to get scared and quit?

To make it online, you have to accept failure and move on. We all fail, even he most experienced of us, still make mistakes.

Yes i agree, better you should spend some bucks on custom domain and work on it rather than flying in the air.

Yeah I get your point man, but its like, spending $100 on domains alone (not all at once) and having none of them work, that is money down the drain and now you're more poor than when you started.

I like the blogger idea, but I might do a wordpress instead with a free host.
If I start seeing decent income, like $10-15 a day, i'll jump straight to a .com with the money earned.

No you wouldn't lose your traffic or rankings

You'd just have to do proper 301 redirects for each page

Awesome, thanks for the info!
That takes ease off my head

That'll make switching to a .com MUCH easier now.

Blogger is FREE and hosted free. It was also one of the properties that got a boost after the 1st Panda update last year, so it has organic potential. Wordpress will not let you monetize.

Get your mind fixed before you start. You will not be more POORER than when you started, you will be more EXPERIENCED than when you started.

Man who telling you to spend $100 on domains? Select 1 niche and buy 1 general domain name (to use on other niches too if you get fails in first) and go for it.

There is a possibility of lost rankings, still. It does happen. Cross domain 301's arent all that cut and dry. You would be better off 301ing via .htaccess. To do this, you have to be able to map every page on your site to the appropriate new pages on the new domain. It is difficult when done right and can still be followed by a temporary loss in rankings.

If I was just starting out and was skint then I would also opt for something free like blogger. No point in spending money on domains or hosting unless you can afford to and you're serious if you ask me.
