Hi guys,

Unfortunately, one of my websites was hit by the new Google Penguin Update! I saw the decrease in traffic 2 days ago and when i checked the rankings, i was nowhere to find in the top 100.

Does anyone happen to know which are the best practices to escape from this penalty?

Did anyone else got hit by the Penguin Update?

How much does it usually take for an update or a recrawling of the website?

Looking forward to hear your experience! Thanks.

Awesome article there. It goes a wee bit long, but it had to in order to cover what it did.

There's another way to escape EVERY Google update.

      Wanna know what it is?

Quit posting sh*t to your website and everyone else's websites. Google wants high quality. Google wants substance. A 300 word spun front page is about as opposite of what Google wants as you can get. 1000+ word posts & pages with relevant backlinks.

That's how you escape Google's updates intact.

Iam getting sick of people claiming oh if you make more quality articules, you will gain google rank. That's B.S. and anyone who claims that is not smart at all. Google uses BOTS , not real people to index the web. So how the hell would a BOT know whats quality or not? You need way more than quality to rank high, quality is just a small part.

Man this must be the "shred JaRyCU" post this month.

Krenisis, let me hold your hand and walk you through this:

Google is a search engine. It consists of a very, very complex algorithm spread across thousands of computers. That algorithm was written by humans. Those humans understand human speech patterns and what words mean, and they are very smart people who can tell the algorithm what to look for.

Google (as a business) has two primary responsibilities: delivering the best possible search results to the people who type their questions and queries into the box, and matching up advertisers with the people most likely to look at their ads.

Those two responsibilities are what drive the smart people who make the algorithm to deliver better and better results. They tell the algorithm how to understand the difference in "there," "their," and "they're" and between "too," "two," and "to" because they have programmed it into a database. "Two" is a number. "Too" means also. "To" is a preposition.

It is programmed to "understand" (meaning to find the appropriate answers from within its own database) when words in a line that begins with a capital letter and end up a period, question mark, or exclamation mark, appear in the proper order. When several of those lines are combined, the algorithm can pick out the phrases and nouns that continue to appear and form a pattern, and then it can "decide" what the web page is about based on what those smart people back in California programmed into its database.

When people like you and I try to game the system, we need to first figure out what those smart people did to create the system. Did they tell their programs and algorithm to just go and find random things that may or may not be related to what the person typed in the box? Or did they, instead, program the algorithm to go and find the absolute best result based on hundreds and thousands of criteria that they have painstakingly programmed into the largest database ever created on Earth?

If you ask me, it sounds like the bot has a pretty good idea of what high quality is.

          Do you?

When I say that you (collective you, not "pointing a finger at YOU") need to stop posting sh*t on your site, I'm speaking to the collective audience reading this. There are a lot of people out there who believe that's is still perfectly acceptable to post a 300 word article that's been autospun onto their site. They don't understand that that is the absolute worst thing you can possibly do.

Google is after quality content. If you don't post the highest quality you can, then you won't be able to rank in a long-term way with your site. Since Penguin was introduced a month ago, I've read through the official Google Blog where they are even going to so far as to look at typos, mis-spelled words, and grammatical errors when it comes down to ranking sites.

In the current SE environment, everything counts. The higher quality content that you display, the better chance you have of ranking high in Google.

This goes the other way around, as well. You have to backlink from high quality sources as well. You cannot simple throw out an SE Nuke campaign on your money site and get to the top of Google like you could in 2009. You can throw random spam garbage and sites and hope it works.

Post-Penguin, you have to have a strategic backlinking plan for the entire first tier of your linking system. Incorporate .EDUs, .GOVs, relevant .coms, 300-500 word blogs, and several other factors.

I know I was in dire need of caffeine when I typed that initial entry, and reading back over it, it does come off a little crass. Maybe this much longer post will give you a better explanation of what I meant.

I apologize too for being rude.

Thanks for taking time to respond in a great way to my post.

First of all, i don't want to give the link, as i don't want to hear that i am in need of backlinks and i want to spam this forum.

Secondly, it is true that i have a wordpress theme that doesn't allow me to have something written on the homepage, except from content in the footer. I can only have a slider on the homepage, and i think that that might harm my website. I never spent too much time to rank the homepage, as i made a page for services and i optimized it with on-page and off-page with backlinks. When i've chosen the theme, i never cared about that single fact, since i made the website as a test, but it turned out to rank well and brought me a lot of money.

Another mistake that i think i made, but i need someone to confirm me this, is that i have links from .edu, .gov, blogs, press releases, etc., but not in the same amount. I have more from blogs, which i think might be an important factor after the new update.

I also used 2 blog networks, do you know if they harm websites after the update or not, as they were alright for some time in the past.

Would sharing on social media play an important role after this update? What about press releases?

I will try to remove some links from blog networks and also try to change some of its on-page content, but as far as i heard, they give something like a punishment and they keep you for at least 30 days, depending on what you did, after that they might crawl your website again to see if you changed something and they even put you back to the top if you changed your website.

Another thing is that i heard a lot of people that got messages in the Webmaster Central from Google letting them know that their website is not alright and that they have to change it, but i never got anything like that.

Another website of mine, is untouched in the search engines and i never worked on the off-page SEO for a long time, but this one is a blog and it doesn't bring me any money. Only the page that i was promoting with some blog network has lowered in the search results and i really think that those links from blog networks might have been the problem. Do you happen to know something about this?

            Thanks again for the reply.

It's not so much about a bot reading for quality, but about VISITORS reading for quality and linking in a NATURAL way to your site. A bot is good at picking up patterns and can see those unnatural backlinks.

If you have a content site, quality content will get spread around and linked to--naturally. Unfortunately, I did what everybody else did and put out a thousand links to my money site with a single keyword. It seemed I was losing the effectiveness of the backlink if I didn't do it that way, even though many warned that wasn't a good strategy. A bot CAN read those patterns.

also, i wouldn't right of the bat associate the change in your rankings to googles update. How old is your website? because if it's still fairly new or drastically increased in backlinks it could be going through what's known as a google dance.

My website is more than 8 months old and climbing slowly on the search results page and hit the page #1 for a few keywords in March, since then was on the #1 page.

I know what the Google dance is and i am telling you is not the case here.

Thanks for your reply, but please don't try to be rude, as it's not the case.

I don't post sh*t on my website, i don't have PLR articles! It's about a service website and i wrote myself all the content that is on the pages. It's true that i had probably too many backlinks to other websites and pages, but they weren't irrelevant!

Stop being smart and start being helpful!

I think the word "escape" is not appropriate to use especially if you are aiming to rank in Google. If you want to rank good in Google, then you have to "deal" with these updates properly. And making good quality contents is another good way of "dealing" in the recent algorithm update.

JaRyCu said and give information about contents. He's right. According to Google Webmaster Guidelines (quality guidelines section), make pages for real people. In my own understanding with that, I think they (Google) define the quality of your website's contents based on what users get from them by sharing it. (by the way, it's just my own understanding, I would still be grateful if somebody will correct me or give another information about it. )

If there's nothing interesting for user in your website, then you will not get the benefit of viral sharing from your users.

    Quoted from Google Webmaster Guidelines:

"Webmasters who spend their energies upholding the spirit of the basic principles will provide a much better user experience and subsequently enjoy better ranking than those who spend their time looking for loopholes they can exploit."

"Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines. Don't deceive your users or present different content to search engines than you display to users, which is commonly referred to as cloaking."

So for me, as simple as they require, just give users/searchers what they want and you'll be on the right track. Why not make a "user-friendly website" instead of focusing too much in making a "search engine-friendly" website? Making both would be a good idea as well.
