Lightbulb What 100% GOOGLE PROOF looks like :)

What's up Warriors?

InternetJon here and I wanted to share with you guys what 100% Google Proof looks like... and I don't mean that in the case of new SEO software or backlinking methods or anything of the like, but seriously check it out:

Ever since the Panda/Penguin nonsense I've been working on building up traffic from other sources than search engines because I did get hit pretty hard. I'm happy to say that it's been a 4 month journey for me that has paid off!

Over 70% referral traffic! Not that I'm slamming SEO or anything of the likes, and I'm definitely not recommending that you stop trying to gain results from search engines because the results from it are equally huge. It's just that I didn't ever realize there was this much traffic in other places.

So how'd I do it?

Glad you guys asked! It was a hard transition but it was WELL worth it. All I had to do? I started marketing like a normal person would. What did this mean? I quit posting useless backlinks in the same places as everyone else, I quit pointlessly doing social bookmarking and bla bla bla....

All I did was engaged the users of these websites. Your site is about dog training?

What everyone else is doing for a link: dog training

What I'M doing for a link now: Click here => NO cost Dog Training guide!

Just an example, I don't train dogs

All I did was marketed my site like Google didn't even exist. Honestly, to me at that point it might as well have been dead. The craziest part is that after honestly committing to this for 4 months... my search rankings even went up.

I know it might seem painfully obvious but are you doing it? If you want it broken down super simple what I have been doing is putting twists on common traffic sources and engaging users (yup, once again... it's that important!). Get these people involved, get them interested in your website.

If you're after the nitty-gritty details then here are some of the exact sources I use:
  • Social Bookmarking
  • Forums
  • Guest Posting
  • Press Releases
  • .... basically I'm everywhere!

Now... a lot of people would look at that list and think "hah, such outdated 2005 backlinking methods" but we aren't getting back links. Think of clever ways to shuffle traffic from those websites to your own.

It's really not that hard (and trust me, I started from scratch!) to do it. These websites have thousands of visitors that are interested in your niche... you just need to get their interest.

Hopefully this wasn't too long for you guys but I just wanted to share with you exactly what I've been doing to successfully get visitors to my sites. If you have any questions fire away and I'll be more than happy to help!

Cheers,
InternetJon

Thanks for sharing your methods, Jon. So which one actually gets your the most traffic? It's a relief to see that it is actually possible to get lots of traffic without Google. Especially since Google has been so moody! haha

Thanks again,
Daniel

Hey Daniel,

Thanks for the response! Glad you liked it.

The one that gets me the most traffic is definitely StumbleUpon. It's kind of finnicky at times but you can get literally thousands of visitors overnight when you catch a viral wave on there.

Cheers,
Jon

Thanks for the share. It is refreshing to see people get amongst their marketing in a way that drives referred traffic as well as organic search traffic.

The irony is that google would prefer you do this than spammy link building and you may notice some nice increases in rankings because of it.

No problem!

Yep, that's the funny thing is I have actually seen search engine traffic increase since practicing these methods. I read something a while back about "marketing like Google doesn't exit" and it works.

Hope more people can benefit from this mindset!

Great when building a brand, not so great when running a bunch of small niche websites. This is definitely the way to go for those who have figured out exactly where they want to focus most of their effort/attention.

You're definitely right about it not being the best for small niche websites... but!

We all know Google's getting sick of those, and that bigger authority websites are where it's at (at least in my opinion). I think that the move from small MFA sites to authority is going to be a very mandatory step that people should be taking anyway.

Any insight on how to get traffic to the littler guys? Would be interested to know.

Well we aren't talking about typical social bookmarking. No "set and forget" type stuff.

What I do is post to these social sites and try to get people involved. Post stuff that you know they're going to repost/digg/upvote (on Reddit) and hope it goes viral.

When you get viral on those sites, that's when the real traffic comes in.

So what ratio of social bookmarking, guest posting, press releases, and forums did you do?

I like guest posting, but after a while, the traffic from guest posts die down to only a couple of visitors a day. Thoughts?

In the niches I'm in - Health & Finance mainly - nothing beats SE traffic in terms of conversion. But I agree it's nice to not be completely reliant on it.

I go for a good healthy mix. ;0

^ one of my sites this month.

If the search engines ban this site tomorrow, I lose 70% of the revenue even though they only account for 50% of the traffic. Sources like Stumbleupon, facebook, twitter, etc do not convert well at least not at scale or in these niches. Forums and related blogs do better though.

Sorry for the slow answer!

I focus pretty much on the social stuff primarily, I like to regularly post to StumbleUpon and other social sites.

For guest posts, the traffic does die down after a while but the key is you need to proactively find new opportunities and places to post. You can build p a pretty decent amount of residual traffic from each post if you keep them coming in at a good rate.

Also, try to stay active on the comments where you've guest posted. Generally it'll help out a little bit!

Cheers,
Jon

Cool, thanks for the share!

That's definitely something to consider, and obviously a huge part of the whole deal. My results are pretty much similar, being that aside from SE taffic, guest posting converts best for me. Probably due to the perceived authority associated with having your content featured.

Once again, thanks for the insight - cool to see other Google proof people on board!

Agreed,

Good advice, I too have changed up my strategies and lean more on social media than the old PPC strategies. The internet is a fast moving target, more now than ever in history, so you have to stay on top of what works tomorrow, not yesterday.

Success to all,

You bet! I'm glad you enjoyed it. There's definitely a certain lack of securit when you rely solely on Google, so you're right - moving to alternate ways is a good idea!

That's the attitude I take with my websites. I do basic SEO but other than that I find it more fulfilling to work with my network and resources at hand. Glad someone else figured it out.

All this thread is about, is promoting your signature link.

Upload the full PDF file of your Analytics, probably clicks from shady websites and not social media.

Why the negative words? He certainly pulled something off and didn't mind sharing some information. Yes he's promoting something, but because he knows it works and wants to show us. This is a thread by a person who understood penguin and did something successful about it.

Great social traffic, but you need to be in a niche that converts well for social I imagine. I mean if you have a bunch of keywords like, dog door stop or how to blow your nose properly, you literally would need to rely on search engine traffic and ranking in the serps.

These are obviously imaginary keywords, but you get the jist. You could post to digg, reddit etc all day long, but i can't imagine anyone re-digging about door stops.

For noobs like me who have to target these poor but searched for keywords, i can't see social traffic being a factor until I have the experience to rank socially targeted keywords.

I may be way off in my thinking here due to inexperience, but if more knowledgeable members know how to market these keywords in social traffic, I'd love to hear it.

The thing is, if you have an entire website about a "dog door stop" or "how to blow your nose" these days, you've yet to adapt! Google themselves doesn't want these anymore, there's a shift to higher quality websites that cover more niches.

A website entirely dedicated to dog related things does have the potential to go viral. You just need to angle it correctly! They won't post about the door stop specifically, but you add content to your site that will go viral and then funnel the people through into your more "salesy" pages, if that makes any sense.

Hope that helped give some insight!

Oh, I see what you mean, but a site entirely dedicated to dogs is going to be so much harder for someone like me to rank, if you're targeting a site about dogs in general, you're playing with the big boys.

I can see how it can go viral no problems, I'm a dog lover myself. I concede too, that Google isn't really looking for these small niche websites anymore, though some do very well from them. For someone like me though getting their feet wet so to speak, I think niche sites are not only a temporary way of earning money, but also invaluable in educating yourself on what ranks and what works.

If I personally was too target a broader niche, I could find myself with months and months of none to very little results, due to taking on the larger and more saturated niche, without the experience or resources more established I'Mers have, I imagine guys like me could find ourselves becoming very discouraged easily.

I'm dragging you off topic here though, one again congrats on your social success, I hope to emulate it one day.

I'm not an SEO guru by any means, but when you're going after a broader niche there should be nothing stopping you from having pages/posts that are targeting those long tail keywords.

Sure the main site itself might be too broad to rank, but you can certainly have posts and pages on your site that rank for the easier keywords.

You're definitely right about niche sites being a great place to learn too!

Hope this helped
