There's definately an art to PPC and requires a lot of testing with good tracking set up, both methods have their good and bad points, do your homework before delving into PPC. I'm guessing you've been affected by the recent updates, if you build good quality back links then you shouldn't have to worry about any updates that Google churns out. Spending more time getting a few good links will always outweigh spending less time getting thousands of worthless links through useless automated processes. |

Social media and social bookmarking are also good options if you are referring to getting traffic. There are apparently tons of traffic outside of Google.

ANY and ALL traffic driving methods should be explored and exploited as much as possible. Don't stick with just one method. If putting up a sign on a highway will work, is feasible and economical, do it.
