Google Penalty or Google Dance?

I've launched a site 2 weeks ago. I put in unique content for the first week, and the site seemed to skyrocket in ranking, reaching as high as page 3 in a few days without a single backlink or promotional effort.

The next week I syndicated my articles to a couple of article directories. I've also posted on my personal blog though it is unrelated to my niche. I've also posted a link on a squidoo lens that claims to be about seo but seems to only serves as a link repository. The same week my rankings fluctuated, jumping across in SERP rankings and finally disappearing from the top 100. My domain is still indexed though, and I can find them past the top 100.

Is this the usual google dance or am I being penalized for that suspicious squidoo backlink?

This has happened to me, some obscure page like site.com/author ranked higher than my home page. I do hope you're right and my ranking stabilizes soon.

I've heard that you get a honey moon period in the initial phase of getting your site listed and then after around 2 weeks its real ranking becomes evident. I'm not too sure if this is what has happened with you it is just what I have read on this forum from previous posts

Your site is 2 weeks old. What do you expect?

People who believe in the sandbox cannot explain
how people can make it to the top with a straight
face. The sites you overtake were obviously
put in the sandbox, right? It's not your hard
work or anything else. And if you come back up,
you should give congrats to yourself for
putting sites in the sandbox. Be glad google
penalized some sites so you can take your
rightful place. I mean you didn't get there
      by your efforts, right?

Getting back to reality. Your site is 2 weeks old.
Making it to page 3 is not skyrocketing.

What happened to hard work and being in it for
      the long haul?

Your site is 2 weeks old. 'nuff said.

If you were disappointed in your results today, lower your standards tomorrow.

You'll have to forgive me, I'm kinda new at this. I do thank you for your comment though, I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Maybe Tango? If you can't dance with it, you'll be out of the floor.

Typical Google dance, no big deal.

Since the site is new, build more quality links. Also, try & rank a 2nd page for the same exact keyword, then link from the 2nd page to the page your really trying to rank (with keyword anchor-text). Repeat...

thank you all for your replies. you'll have to forgive me as im new at this.

So from what I've gathered from you so far is that it's most likely that my site is young. And if I did get penalized or sandboxed it'll lift eventually, hopefully sooner than later?

Agreed - Google Dance its only been 2 weeks. I don't even think they would have a reason to penalize you since you're so new.

If you had added 10,000 crap back links in the first 2 weeks they may find you. But chances are you would still fly under the radar. BTW - I don't endorse this kind of back linking...

Happens every time when I commence work on a site weather new or aged domain. All of a sudden we start building links and this happens. It totally sounds like the dance my friend. No worries.

A lot of sites are bouncing around at the moment. I'd wait to draw any conclusions on your ranks.
