Does linking to other websites only benefit your if the website is confirmed authority?

I was thinking if a website gains more and more rank in a niche would this mean that all your backlinks would gain more rank because they are linking to you thus the backlinks will increase in power or does this only apply if you have been confirmed manually as a authoritative site?

What exactly does it mean to be a authority website? can any website be a authority ina particular niche?

Or is it just for wikipedia... and other big websites that applies?

    An authority site is like WebMD covering numerous topics with well written and trustworthy content. You'll typically see them in the top positions of the serps like Wikipedia.

    In my experience, Google uses the same algorithm to rank results as it does to weight links, so yes, as a website gains more popularity the backlinks increase in weight. Just keep in mind that you cannot find all of the website that Google places the most weight on for a particular keyword because Google's search results are very regional. The top 100 for a search done in the midwest is very different from the top 100 for a search done on the west coast or east coast, etc.

    what i mean is your money site is gaining more authority in a keyword does that mean the backlinks websites also become more powerfull becuase your getting more authority?

      I know what you mean and I think that is very flawed thinking, then I could link out to every single authority site and gain authority that way myself as well.

    nah not really... Im not saying the benefit will be a lot and if you have a lot of out bound links it wouldn't work but just if the sites status improves the link profile will all be linking to a more authority website thus that will improve as well.

    On one of my websites I link to Angie's List and the Better Business Bureau. I link to the page where my business shows up so that my sites visitors can see my good reviews on both sites. From what I've seen, it seems that my linking to them helps them rank higher for my keywords. I think that's what you're asking. Yes, it does help them.

      That's like triangle link building, not really what the OP is talking about but yeah that could help indeed in the way that you are doing it.
